An absolute genius of a player. Remember him scoring in front of me against Spurs, he was my favourite player. That goal in the 4-4 against Everton would have been my pick of all time if it hadn't been for the Dalglish resignation soon after.

His ability to move into the right space was amazing.

That for me was what seperated him from the rest. Sure he has superb quality on the ball but his reading of the game was amazing.

By the way, i loved that silver jersey.

'Tis funny that - I was on eBay the other day and saw that silver shirt, and thought of Barnes immediately...every time I see that shirt the first thing I think of is Digger.

Does that ring true for anyone else?! The red shirt with the white flecks doesn't make me make that connection immediately, even though it was the same year...but the silver shirt, every time.

Same here. The Adidas one from a few seasons later with the three white stripes coming from the bottom on each side always reminds me of fowler. Dunno why, but this seasons is Kuyt.

Absolutely agree. And the one with the big white v-neck collar always reminds me of Owen, especially since I think it was 3 sizes too big.

for me the best player in my lifetime playing for liverpool. i include kenny in that as well.

Agreed. I was 11 when Barnes signed for us so I think it was right at the time I was starting to really understand football rather than just like it, but he's the best I've ever seen for us.

Beardsley makes the top 5 too.

Reminds me of Roy Evans, Ronnie Moran and Kenny that one.

Kenny's always the Crown Paints shirt for me after he scored that beautiful volley against Chelsea.

There was a time when I almost thought it unfair that we had John Barnes; most opposition players just couldn't get near him. Also amazing how many of those great goals he scored with his right foot.

Oh yeah! I still have that white tracksuit top...bit small for me now obviously, but it's a nice memory.

I wonder if I tossed it out we'd win the league again?

Amazing player. I too was 11 when we signed Barnes. Whenever he had the ball at his feet we looked capable of scoring. Best player I've seen in a Liverpool jersey. I only remember the latter stage of King Kenny's career so I cannot make a fair comparison.

kenny, digger, beardsley, big jan... any wonder we won stuff.

with Rush and aldridge up front running into the right spaces and that lot passing to them..

I loved the 80's...

oh - our defense wasn;t too shabby either.. or our workhorse in midfield... skippy, mcmahon, houghton...

the last goal on that clip v QPR (his second in a 2-1 win in 87 if memory if working correctly) is the one I think of when I think of Barnes. An awesome player.

He's also tied into my head from a radio commentary that went along the line of 'Barnes to Rush to Barnes to Rush to Barnes to COLLYMORE!'

Doubt anyone will remember that game though!

The best player i ever saw. No doubt about it.

One of my strongest memories of him, and i've mentioned it before, is of the header he scores when he's diving away from both ball and goal and yet still manages to get enough power onto it to direct it in. T'was against Villa or West Ham i think.

The John Barnes video that came out about 1990 was unbelievable but it was worn out long ago and they haven't released a DVD of it.

makes me laugh when people go on about Giggs, Ronaldo and any number of others, Barnes scored (I think) 28 from left wing one season. Puts the reast of em into perspective. Like a few others, I think Kenny was the best footballer I've seen for us in my lifetime, but Digger was the most exciting.

1989/90 season, he won the Player of the Year award as well.

Barnes is my all time favourite player, and a big part of why I'm a Liverpool supporter.
