I'm sure all the clubs have been officially approached, so it's disgusting how small a contribution some clubs are making.

love to know how much chelsea's club contribution was. if it was more than £10k i'll be surprised.

Why?

Because it's tokenistic, because there are a number of people doing skilled jobs for s**** money yet nurses seem to be a more emotive subject than the others, because I feel that this doesn't go anywhere near to resolving the issues around nurses pay and conditions and because 1 days salary stands for f*** all

how many of the players signed up would vote for paying a higher percentage of their vast salaries in tax to improve public services

This is not an issue to be resolved by a group of privileged sportsmen donating a days salary

next week, bono auctions off his cowboy hat and sunglasses to help binmen have a piss-up.

The feckers wouldn't do that quietly either.

I understand the point you are making and in some ways I agree with what you are saying. At the same time, I don't think any government is going to have the balls to address this sort of isse (low paid skilled workers), because it would mean higher taxes. I certainly don't think governments would be more likely to act if such initiatives didn't exist.

One could argue that organisations like Oxfam should not exist, because by providing a certain - but still fairly low - level of charity (much of it donated by the public, both in terms of goods and/or finances) , they allow governments to get away with contributing much less (or nothing) to those that need assistance.

I remember seeing a report somewhere about how those who are less well off give a far greater proportion of their earnings to charity than those who have far more money to spare. So I think any initiative that gets the rich to donate to a good cause, is something worthwhile. It's not a solution, but it's still better than nothing.

and why not?

because they're s*** scared of the super-rich

so excuse me if I don't applaud the super rich for their tiny gestures

How many days pay has Niall Quinn given?

None. He's been visiting hospitals and performing healing miracles through the laying on of hands.

Governments are too scared to raise taxes not just because they're scared of the super rich - a tiny minority - but because they are scared of the wider electorate, the ones who decide who governs.

Yes. Because most super rich are indeed selfish and contribute little to anyone else, we should sneer at any initiative where they do make any donations. Anyway, I only posted to comment that it's disgusting that some teams are contributing so little. I don't think anybody thinks this is the greatest thing ever, something to be especially applauded.

If a rich person makes a donation, it doesn't mean they're excused of all social responsibility, but as I said before, giving something is surely better than giving nothing.

Pretty much all there is to say on the issue I reckon.

Surely the most important thing here is rasing awareness and i would hazard a guess that that is why this campaign has been focussed at the national sport. I would imagine the £750,000 raised is just a bonus because that aint really gonna go far amongst hundreds of thousands of nurses.
