Much as I don't like the howling, mob-mentality abuse of refs, I'll make an exception where this man is concerned. His "performaces" ('cos that's how I think he sees them) at Anfield recently have been bizarre to say the least. He genuinely thinks he's a part of the main event. There's no other explaination for it. As a ref, I think he's quite good, looked at objectively. It's his playing to the crowd and general "mateyness" with the players that I find disturbing. Referee quitely, discreetly and then go home and shut up. That's what we want from a ref. Not some pouting primadonna.

GRAHAM POLL is set to become a TV star after calling full time on being a Premiership referee.

 

The Tring whistler will take charge of his final top-flight game at Portsmouth tomorrow when they entertain Arsenal. But Poll has already set his sights on a media career and has had discussions with Sky and the BBC about a new career in television.

 

Poll is due to appear on the BBC's Inside Sport on Monday night and English football's most high-profile official wants to become a star in his own right.

Poll is an excellent ref when he is refereeing bread-and-butter games, but when he referees a "big" match he seems to get over-excited. He is also poor when tempers get heated - he seems to panic. Once he starts producing cards, everything can get seriously out-of-hand.
