From the Beebs gossip page today:

Liverpool are favourites to beat Chelsea in the race to sign Manchester City defender Micah Richards. (The People)

Any truth to this?

Hope so.

Affordable version of Alves, if still a bit raw.

Would be a gamble if its over £10M but we've got the dosh to be able to do that now.

He could turn out to be a world class center back.

Dont see that at all, in price or in playing style. Alves is a right sided player who can play anywhere on that side, Richards is a defender, a centre half or right back, much more in common with Sergio Ramos.

He's more than capable of playing further up the field, beating players and whipping a good cross in. He's done it for City on a few occasions. Granted he wouldn't be bought to play predominantly RM as Alves might but he could capably fill in imo.

Alves will be about £18M-£20M I'd imagine Richards £12M ish.

Add to that his versatility at CB i reckon he'd be a good buy,

Hope not, we don't need another right back.

but we do. Finnan is getting no younger, has maybe another 2 seasons left. Richards could come in and gradualy ease himself into the team, while Finnan gradually plays fewer and fewer games. for an example of this see Agger and Hyypia

Cracking player - but do we need him?

We're set at right back really, even more so if we go for Alves, we've got Carra and Agger at CB, and he's not better than either of those two, not yet anyway.

Don't see where he'd fit in.

very very very good player

Totally agree - a F****** monster of a man as well.

Could easily be a fixture in the side for the next 10 years at either RB, CB or CM.

Richards is under 20, Carra is 30 next birthday I think, Finnan is 31 now, Sami is about 100, and we all agree Palletta(sp?) is no where near ready so as we stand our defensive cover at RB and CB is Arbeloa, who is currently suffering a slight dip in form.

As a versatile player. He could play accross the defence and fill in in midfield.

Chelsea want him as a long term replacement for Gallas.

He's not the best full back, certainly would rather any of our current two over him, and even more so Alves, he's not Carra or the Dagger, and as for central midfield, well, enough said.

He's good, but as I've just said, I don't see where he fits in with us right now.

I never believe any transfer story. Especially on a Sunday. He is a very good prospect though and as said, Finnan is over 30 now and we need to look long term

Carra still has a few years ahead of him, so let's not pencil him out just yet eh? Finnan's performing very well, has been since Rafa arrived, and Arbeloa is more than adequate cover, despite a dip in form (that shouldn't neccessitate a signing of any player really either). By what I've seen, Arbeloa looks better going forwards anyway. The main point I'm trying to get at really is the fact that Richards would need to play, no point us signing him and throwing him the bench for half a season. If he's going to come in, he would have to play, and right now I don't see a position open for him.

not sure he's quite that old yet - even if he was, the way he plays, injuries permitting he will go on till he's 35 no problem.

Come on, you must know more than that !

Would be a very good signing if it's true.

I dont...to be honest I a m going to get little out of City from now on.......he is a virtual cast off there now and he will leave in the summer (Jordan that is)

All I know that it was common knowledge there that Richards woud be off this summer, but the smart money was on a London move.....he has family there

howeevr, if he is available it wouldnt suprise me to see us got for him....he is a fantastic prospect

You'd rather have Arbeloa over Richards? And as a CB, which is where I see his career going long term he's FAR better than Carra was even 3 or 4 years ago.

He could easily turn out to be a truly outstanding footballer in a few years and we need to be signing players like him up now rather than try to find £30M for him in 5 years time.

Here's the story:

RAFA RICH PICKINGS

EXCLUSIVE BARCLAYS PREMIERSHIP Kop boss to beat Jose in £15m Micah race

By Alan Nixon

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez is poised to out-muscle Chelsea in the fight for Micah Richards - and put one over on arch-rival Jose Mourinho.

Manchester City's young England defender is on the Anfield wish-list thanks to the new American money at the club.

Chelsea didn't follow through their interest in Richards in the last transfer window because of his £20million valuation but will go back in the summer.

However, Champions League rivals Liverpool think they have the financial muscle to win the auction - and believe Richards would prefer to join them.

His season has ended because of a calf problem that needs an operation but Liverpool are ready to bid.

Benitez sees Richards as a right back and eventually a centre-half - he has filled both positions for City

Obviously, not the most reliable of sources. ;)
