knock on effects if we were to win the CL

1. whoever finishes 2nd would have to qualify. That would be great to watch, whoever it is! we would also have a different pre-season.

2. Our UEFA ranking would be extremely high and we could potentially be the highest ranking team in Europe; can't remember the last time that happened to an english club.

3. Financially, would provide a greater foundation that we are already looking at!

As mocktastic as this is, I actually mentioned something about would 2nd place have to qualify if we won the thing a few weeks ago, would be nice to know.

I shall now go and dig up Murphy's body and ask him to give me the patent to his law - there goes the hotel booking and flights to Athens...

1. no they wouldn't

2. we would not be highest ranking team, far from it infact.

3. we would be not that much better off than we have been for the past two years, the fact that new shirt sponsorship and new tv deal next season will do more for us financially compared to the last couple of years (compared to 2005 it would only give us about £3m more from tv money for next season).

1. Yes they would

2. 3rd is not bad I think across Europe

3. Winning would provide serious money, losing would not, ergo we would be better off financially.

Also, if you want more mockering, if the scum lose to ac milan they will lose their top seed for cl next season...

1. No they wouldn't, this was brought up two years ago, it was also brought up last season for arsenal and the answer was always given that the second place team would NOT go into the qualifiers.

2. I'm not denying that but we would still be near on 20 points behind being top spot.

3. We would have only a minor increase in revenues for the current financial year compared to the last couple of years, next season onwards would be different but only because revenues are due to increase by around £18m a season anyway with the new tv and sponsorship deal. Now if we got to a similar stage next season in the competition then I would be inclined to agree (we would get around £4m from the monaco and japan trips alone), but we need to perform better than the first knock-out stage as happened last season.

 Newcastle 11th best team in Europe!

Must be accurate ;)

I thought that countries could only have two automatic qualifiers and if the winners come outside of the top two then second then has to pre-qualify. Could be wrong though.

Was thinking the other day how funny it would be if United lost a qualifying round after being beaten to the title and FA Cup by Chelsea and us in the European Cup final.

I'm sure that they changed the rules after the problems we encountered after 2005.

I'm pretty sure that the rules state that the winners automatically qualify, therefore 2nd would have to play in the final qualifiers.

It is.

However becuase of the way UEFA give 2 points for every win it means the "new" UEFA cup format allows teams like Seville and Newcastle to harvest loads of points against **** opposition.

Hence the 2010 rankings ;)

The one bonus I always think is if we win the European Cup this year, then next year after we spend a hefty wedge of cash on new players and win the league next season, when (and they will) people turn around and say "You've bought success" we can just turn around and say "but this this is the team that won two European Cups and an FA Cup three years before getting taken over"

I seem to recall us occupying that position after we won the treble.
