honourablegeorge Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Dudek, Agger, Riise, Alonso, Crouch, Fowler, Pennant, Bellamy, Kuyt, Carragher, Paletta, Luis Garcia, Guthrie, Peltier, Darby, Martin, Anderson, Roque. Surprised to see Alonso on the plane, to be honest.
Benitez Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I'm not, we need one first team midfielder! I am quite surprised to see Kuyt and Carra there though. Would have thought they get the night off. But there is no Hyypia, so maybe he's injured and Carra has to go.
JayKay Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Sami has a thigh injury, not supposed to be serious but he commented already on saturday that he'll most probably miss the CL game.Apparently the thigh was sore already before the Wigan game but they thought he could still play
Boca Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Surprised that El Zahr isn't in the squad. If Rafa had enough confidence to play him against Portsmouth then I would have thought this game would have been ideal to get him more experience.
Falconhoof Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I wouldn't be afraid of playing Agger and Paletta in the middle. Leave Carra on the bench.Riise needs to be protected because we have so few left sided players. Tricky to pick a team out of that little lot. Obviously Guthrie HAS to start now, which will be great to see and clearly you'd need a wise head in there to steady him, so it'll be Alonso and Guthrie. Fowler and Crouch up front ?
Phil236849 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 strange that nabil el-zhar is not included after his debut and james smith has fallen behind darby?
honourablegeorge Posted December 4, 2006 Author Posted December 4, 2006 I'm not, we need one first team midfielder! Granted, but we only have him and Gerrard fit for midfield, we've loads of games coming up, he's just back from an injury, the game doesn't matter that much, and Galatasary can be rather generous with the studs at times. An unecessary risk, I'd have thought.
Falconhoof Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 strange that nabil el-zhar is not included after his debut and james smith has fallen behind darby? It doesn't always work like that. Sometimes coaches test a young players reaction to being dropped. not saying thats the case here but its as much a part of a young players development that they don't take things for granted as it is to get them on a plane to a European game. El Zhar has had a couple of appearances under his belt, he can absorb what he's learned and build on it in training. Not sure about Darby. What do you know about him as a player ?
Guest redfromtubebar Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 DudekDarbyRoquePalettaAggerPennantAndersonPeltierGuthrieFowlerCrouch/Bellamy Let's not risk any injuries or bookings to regular starters.

Maybe he'll be on the bench 'in case' with Guthrie and Carra starting in midfield.
Gomez Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 strange that nabil el-zhar is not included after his debut and james smith has fallen behind darby? We have to name a squad of players who are eligable to play in the CL before the first game, remember all that deadline business? I think there are exemptions for youth players who've been here a certain amount of time, but other than that, you can only pick from players you've named. El Zhar was signed after that date, I presume he could play in the PL as he was tecnically a free agent, but not in the CL.
Serko Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) Surprised that El Zahr isn't in the squad. If Rafa had enough confidence to play him against Portsmouth then I would have thought this game would have been ideal to get him more experience. Maybe he wasn't registered in the original 25man squad we named at the start of the season and therefore can't play. on the other hand I beleive youth players who have been at the club x amount of years can play even if not in the original squad. Gomez beat me to it. Edited December 4, 2006 by Serko

12twelve Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I can see Alonso playing and picking up a stupid injury again, given our recent luck
honourablegeorge Posted December 4, 2006 Author Posted December 4, 2006 DudekDarbyRoquePalettaAggerPennantAndersonPeltierGuthrieFowlerCrouch/Bellamy Let's not risk any injuries or bookings to regular starters. Big Darby game on Tuesday, then.
Guest PaulMcC Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I didn't think Carra would've travelled. He wanted to play in this apparently cos of it's back in the Attaturk.
Boca Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 yep, El Zhar isn't in our CL squad. Full squad listed 'ere Adam Hammill is listed as Northern Irish on that list. Strange.
Maldini Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Darby was captain of the youth cup winning team, right back, rated pretty highly. Still eligible for the u18s this season I think.
Cobs Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Who the f*ck is Darby?i asked for his autograph once cn*t only signed his name across my heart...
Phil236849 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Darby played in the u18s match on sat according to the report on the o'fish. if memory served right, he skippered the side in the fa cup youth win from right back. i seem to recall that he was pacey, without convincing in terms of attacking skills. the man city left winger had some joy in the second leg.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Absolutely over the moon for Dudek as he is likely to play, given Reina's absence
