Chewie Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 this is pure speculation of course in that as yet we don't know if we are gonna be a big player financially as a result of any takeover and we don't know how Rafa is when it comes to buying or managing the top names in football...but that last point is the point of this post! We actually don't know if Rafa can do either - buy or manage - the so-called major players as he's never been in a position to do this! I'm not saying he can't do this or that he won't be able to, its just that when he arrived he did so on the basis of what he could do with an unfancied side - which he vindicated in his first year (moment to reflect on the glory of Istanbul...) - but we have nothing to base him on in terms of buying and managing players in the upper echelons of the transfer market....(mind you this last point is skewed by the fact that whether or not a player is supposedly in this class is more dependant on the purchasing club's willingness and ability to pay rather than the player's actual worth - see Chelski) anyway - it's a matter for debate, that's all.... Guest stevo96 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) apart from the fact that all his best buys have been the most expensive ones? what a poor thread, sorry. Edited December 4, 2006 by stevo96
Herbie von Smalls Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Rafa's an idiot. i'd be surprised if he could spend christmas with his family.
Rimbeux Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I'd speculate that most of any windfall will rightly go to the stadium, and the club will benefit from that longterm. If there is some immediate boost to our spending from any new owners cash, fine, but I dont for one minute expect it to be huge or an ongoing gift. And yes Benitez is deffo the right man to deal with all eventualities.
Figaro Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) Alves and Poulsen. Chelsea have not spoken to Alves' agent nor Sevilla CF nor directly to the player. The only clubs to have done so are LFC and Milan. (A message for Rashid - this is not from any paper over here. His agent was quizzed by Del Nido on Friday.) Edited December 4, 2006 by Figaro

With the money we're "supposed" to be getting, i say let's just buy Kaka, Et'o & Alves.
alias75 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 I think its important if Rafa is given money to spend we get players with the right atttude and not just big name players. In this respect i think Rafa is the ideal man to be in charge since with all his signings this seems to be the most important attribute he looks for. Could be the end for someone like Pennant though, no disrespect but hes not the type of player a team with money to spend needs, and also one of our forwards. I think we need real top quality in that position, Kuyt, Bellamy, Crouch and 1 superstar forward isnt a bad 4. Alves would be my #1 choice though as well as Gareth Bale who i think is going to become a great player and left back is a position we need to look at.

McBain Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 If you dont trust the manager to spend money then basically you dont trust him at all. If he's the boss then he spends the money on who he wants

IF money wasn't an issue All I want for Christmas is: a new Left-Back (agree, Bale looks worth a punt), cover/new Right-Back (Micah Richards), a new Right-Winger (Daniel Alves, everytime I see Pennant ), a new striker (unsure? Darren Bent?)

Thats just what the takeover would cost, that doesnt mean thats all the money they have, of course Rafa would be given money to improve the team. DonRafa Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 £450 million - £250 million to buy the club - £200 million for a stadium = 0. Why do people think investment = instant mega millions for Rafa? I don't want mega millions, but I do want us to be able to afford the players that Rafa wants, like Alves. Such players should be attainable targets for our club..................not too much to ask is it?
Rimbeux Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Thats just what the takeover would cost, that doesnt mean thats all the money they have, of course Rafa would be given money to improve the team. Of course nothing. What is there to suggest that the manager will suddenly be handed funds over and above what he would have had, especially after a massive amount has been spent getting control? The plan has always been to increase income by investing in a new stadium, that's where the future income is coming from, whether DM stays or sells. If the deals (ownership, stadium, stadium sponsorship), are strctured in a way to give the manager more cash short-term, then happy days, but I wouldn't expect anything beyond that

Huyton_Red Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) £450 million - £250 million to buy the club - £200 million for a stadium = 0. Why do people think investment = instant mega millions for Rafa? Because what is the point of investing such a large amount of money into Liverpool if on the pitch they are going to continue on the same path, thereby keeping the club at the same level off the pitch Liverpool is a gem of an investment for anyone with a lot of money who is looking at the long term, you are getting the only english club with the potential to generate as much income as Man Utd for a third of what Utd cost. If you invest in the team as well as the club you could turn it into a huge commercial success, just like Man Utd have done. Edited December 4, 2006 by Huyton_Sissoko
RP Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) I believe that is correct (Huyton's point). But I think the original question is valid - if the constraints under which Rafa has operated so far (at Valencia as well as for us) are suddenly removed, it will be interesting to see how he reacts. I have no doubts of his ability, but it's a legitimate question IMO. Edited December 4, 2006 by RP
Benitez Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 well he's managed one of the biggest egos in sport here pretty well, so I think he'd cope I really don't even think it is a legitimate question to be honest RP - not the one about how he'd manage 'big players' anyway. Cos he has managed em. The biggest players are the ones who are actually successful, and he managed a lot of them at Valencia and a fair few here.
PhilM Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Very clever, and Poulsens First Name is? Very clever, and Poulsens First Name is? Christian, Danish midfielder who plays for Sevilla.
Maldini Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 If the new owner pays for the stadium it will mean a lot more money for Rafa to spend every year because we won't have to repay a loan. I think the repayments were somewhere between £10m and £20m a year. That money can now be spent on players.
