Impressed with Guthrie, but he seemed to be labouring at times.

First time I've seen Guthrie. Very good, settled down quickly and was knocking it about confidently and looked strong in the tackle, playing on adrenaline by the look of him, did well.

Peltier looked fairly steady but can't take a throw in for toffee.

Paletta seemed a bit excitable at times, needs more of these games. All the defence were getting pulled all over chasing the ball at the end.

Smith...er...not quite ready

don't know quite what to make of that kev!

He played some nice touches, good balls etc but he seemed to be tugging for breath at times.

Smith in particular, and Peltier to a lesser extent didn't look physically strong enough for the top level - certainly not yet at least. I was surprised Smith got a run out rather than Anderson or Hamill, who I was hoping to see get 20 minuites or so.

Guthrie was an interesting one. I'm sure I've seen him play for the reserves before without really noticing him, but he did well when he came on. He seemed to have a good football brain and contributed some nice touches and passes. The problem for any young central midfielder at our club though is the wealth of talent we have in that position already and their respective ages.

Paletta showed a few flashes of a real talent. He put in some strong tackles, and obviously scored with a cracking header. Also, right in front of where we were in The Main Stand he struck a raking pass over about 50 yards right into Riise's path so the lad can pass the ball at long range as well.

My major concern with Paletta would be his lack of pace - Rafa has compared him to Carragher but I feel he needs to learn more from Hyypia, in that he'll never be the quickest so he needs to work on his reading of the game and positioning to shine at the highest level.

shouldnt be a problem for a kid - though maybe nerves/tension?

Got no problem with him, he done very well.

Peltier was good - played it safe but passed ok and made some decent challenges. Put over a terrific cross under pressure in the corner 2nd half. Quietly impressive but not stand-out. You noticed the difference almost immediately when Smith came on - his 1st tackle was rash, gave a free kick away, they scored and he really struggled after that because they targeted our right hand side.

Paletta is raw, made some strong sliding tackles but eventually mis-timed one and received his customary yellow card. Not as strong under the high ball as I hoped but after saying to a mate that he resembled Morientes, he then scored from a Nando-like leaping header right in front of the kop! In fact, he attacks the ball at corners/free kicks better than any of our strikers and was a real handful for Reading. Went AWOL for their last 2 goals and for me, I'm not yet sure he has what it takes to be more than a cult hero - he had his Igor-like supporters around me - and has to work hard on his positioning & awareness.

Agger was class from start to finish. He's not got lightning pace but had a one-on-one 2nd half from the halfway line and matched the striker, steering him away from goal and finally a brilliant block tackle saved even a corner. His composure on the ball and short & long range passing skills give us a totally new dimension and even more impressive is his judgement - he very rarely gives the ball away.

I liked the look of Guthrie - watched him in the warm-ups and he strikes the ball well then when he came on he was far from over-awed, linking the play, busy, always showing for the ball and keeping his position. Very tidy & efficient passer, reminds me a bit of Steven Davis of Villa.

Nice to see the young lads do well (except poor Smithie) and by the way, young Mr Fowler was absolutely brilliant, a genius at work.

Not sure i'd include Agger in these assessments to be honest :D We've seen him enough times and yes he is young but he's a bit like Messi and Rooney in that they don't look lost playing alongside the more experienced pros.

I like the look of Fowler.

guthrie had a bit about him, the others didn't really.

palletta is obviously ahead of the likes of peltier, but he still looked miles off the first XL to me.

I like your thinking. If we play 40 players, we can afford to carry the 9 per game we have been so far. Brilliant!! :D
