Agger's deadly.

He's also already had his slip -- was he not at fault for one of the goals in pre-season or something in his first match, if I remember correctly?

He didn't play in pre season. His first game was against Chelsea.

He was partly at fault for a goal last season after a misplaced pass though. Fulham was it?

When the lad gets his chance in the side, by god does he take it!

Another accomplished display tonight. So assured on the ball and in his defending - he makes Carra look crude by comparison!

The real test will come when he makes a slip that costs us (as he inevitably will) and how he reacts to that.

In the meantime, I'm going to do my best not to get carried away but he does look awfully promising...

agree 100%

except re. the highlighted bit : he already has - people seem to have completely forgotten his misplaced square ball inside from the main stand touchline that was intercepted & led directly to a goal - fulham last season at home, i think, inside the first 30 mins [edit. re Eiler99 actually remembering the correct game - ta lad]

he reacted to it fine, he's a very mature player for his age, and i'm certain he'll continue to improve on an already highly encouraging start.

as sami slowly approaches the end of his career at the very top (still a season or two away in my opinion), daniel will gradually replace him. he'll do a fine job.

it might seem an unfashionable sentiment to express judging from many comments in the last few days - some understandable, some less so - but this in my eyes represents another sound move by our manager : a genuine great will gradually be called upon less and less, and his replacement will gradually be given more and more responsibility. rafa is boss.

Yup, he was, although Gerrard stood still and tried to fake the opposition player which didn't work. He then didn't bother to chase back and they scored.

Agger was class last night - put his foot in and made some great interceptions in key areas. I love how comfortable he is on the ball. It will be a very difficult desicion for Rafa on Sunday, but I think he will be inclined to go with Agger over Hyypia to have that reassuring pace there against Shevchenko and Drogba.

tell you what, the press bang on about how rio ferdinand is a ballplaying defender and about how comfortable he is in possession, but he's got nothing on agger. the boy is so happy with the ball at his feet and his head up and just glides out of defence in possession. lovely to watch.

I hadn't forgotten about that incident but as Sabre says I think Gerrard was partly at fault too.

maybe. ste was deffo the intended recipient of the pass, he pushed forward a little whereas daniel played the ball absolutely square - it wasn't a million miles different from xabi's intercepted pass in the fa cup final (leading to their 1st goal) - underhit, plus a little misdirected. both passes seemed a bit lazy and complacent.

anyway, i wasn't pulling you uppersonally in particular - in general most have said something along the lines of 'he's never put a foot wrong' - i personally think he has, but, like i say, he's responded to it the right way.

so, in short mate,

I must admit I felt a twinge watching him "glide out of defence"...

Sami was rested and will be back for the physical battle against drogba.

I would play Agger at left back v chavs. He is a far better defender than Warnock and more comfortable in possession plus his height alongside Hyypia will help combat their biggest danger - set pieces.

Drogba always batters hyppia

I dont see any point in playing him against Chelsea

Agger played against drogba and svechenko in the charity shield and did well

If players play well they should keep their place, this goes for agger and kuyt

drogba has raped sami several times and sami's lack of pace will be exposed against drogba and shevchenko.

can see the school of thought for five in midfield though, swamp them in the middle, combat their fullbacks getting forward and have some real width to our game.

uh-oh, I fear now that young D.Agger is taking over from Xabi in the 'I'm not gay honest guv' love-in on YNWA.

As for Sunday, I hope we stick to that back four. I really don't want to see Agger on the bench for this one! No need to change it now until JAR is fit as far as I'm concerned.

i agree with all the agger praise, he was exceptional. to me he looked a clone of jamie in terms of his statuture reading of the game and composure, but then had the confidence (and ability) to bring the ball out.

I have no concerns with the individuals, but i do have a worry if jamie and agger have the right statuture of a partnership ie height wise. There is no question that Sami's sheer height is a very important to our defence. If we are saying that agger has or is about to take over sami, will we then have problems due to the height of the pair of them?

Sami is 6'3" and Agger is 6'2" according to wikiwikiwikipedia profiles, whether that is right or not, I dunno.

Agger looks pretty damn tall, although that may be cos he's quite spindly looking :D Of what I've seen so far, he's a good headerer, and tough enough, despite needing to put on some muscle!
