Diao gets Addicks chance

By Peter ORourke - Created on 24 Jul 2006

Skysports.com can reveal Salif Diao has linked up with Charlton for a trial.

Diao is open to offers as he looks set to leave Liverpool this summer.

The Senegal international is well down the pecking order at Anfield and Liverpool have indicated they are willing to part company with the tough-tackling midfielder.

Diao spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth, but injury blighted his stay at Fratton Park.

Charlton are now pondering offering the former Sedan man a move to The Valley by inviting him to training for a week.

Addicks boss Iain Dowie is keen to bolster his squad and he will have a look at Diao in training before deciding whether or not to pursue his interest in the midfielder.

The player's agent Charles Collymore confirmed Diao had joined up with Charlton so that both parties can have a look at each other.

"Salif is spending the week with Charlton and he will train with them," Collymore told skysports.com.

"He is going down there so that he can have a look at the club and so that Iain Dowie can cast an eye over Salif.

"He is set to travel with the squad for their pre-season games with Hibernian and Valencia this week and we will take things from there."

If Diao impresses during his week at Charlton he could win a permanent move to The Valley.

Just shows you how good a manager Dowie is haha

Christ! Things have really turned out bad for the lad haven't they? From signing to Liverpool to going on trial at Charlton.

Houlier has to take some blame for this.

You don't rate Houllier. We know.

Any chance of giving it a rest?

Sorry. I didn't realise the thought police were in.

He was actually pretty good for the first six months or so, when he wasn't played in defence. Kept Gerrard out of the side at one point.

Went dramatically downhill after that.

Without that last sentence you could be doing the "defend the indefensible" thing on that Radio 5 sports quiz.

He really wasn't think there was a rose tinted view at the time because he was a fairly expensive signing .

Getting picked for one game which Gerrard didn't play doesn't mean he kept him out of the side, and Sami got dropped for Igor once didn't mean he was a good centre back though.

He had a blinder away to Norwich the season before last. I think it was new years day with the ridiculously early kick off.
