emotionally, i find it difficult to be inspired, as gary ablett was never a star and has for so long been referred to in somewhat disparaging terms.

Being a star is not a pre-requisite for being a great coach or even great manager, look no further than Rafa to substanciate this.

without sounding like a stuck record, if Rafa recruited him then I have no worries.

He might be a blue but we have had our share of them - he knows that he's going to a vastly superior set up where he'll develop under imo one of the top coaches in the game.

He wouldn't have come here if there wasn't a better career plan for him.

letts just hope he doesnt get booed by his own supporters like he used to as a player lol He said the Anfield boo boys made his life a misery when he joined Everton as a player

I never understood why Kenny picked him. Sh*t is not the word :D

Was he ever actually booed though ?

All I remember is the odd comment being shouted at him. And I mean the odd one, a few times a game, by individuals...not mass chanting or anything.

In his early 20s Rafa was sent out on loan by Real Madrid to get a bit of experience. While on loan he did his knee in and was forced to retire after a couple of failed come back attempts. But for the injury he would have played at a much higher level than Ablett, but that's neither here nor there.

s*** players can become good coaches/managers (Iain Dowie for example), as you say the playing career is of no relvance when it comes to coaching.

Didn't know that about the injury actually - I thought he just didn't make the grade...

He wasn't on loan when he did his knee in, he was playing for Spain's universities team in a tournament in Mexico. He was only about 19 at the time, did his cruciate ligament, and carried on playing  And was never the same again. Retired at the age of 26

I hadn't realised there was a higher level than LFC...........

Aye, but under Uncle Roy and Souie, we had worse.

It's so hard to judge players from different eras though, isn't it ? Was Rushie better than Roger Hunt, was Ablett a bigger pile of sh*t than Josemi ? ;)

I love it. I think he was a good player(even he was our worse...but Liverpool had a fantastic team when he played).

As a player, the best thing I can say about him was that he was better than Nicky Tanner.

As a coach? I guess we'll find out.

Who cares what he was like as a player, that's totally irrelevant as he won't be playing for us. What he should and will be judged on is his ability as a coach/manager for the reserve team. If Rafa did give him the scenario tests as someone on RAWK mentioned and he came through that then he must have impressed Rafa with his knowledge and ability.

Good luck Gary, hope it works out for you.

He sounds like a reliable sort who will get his head down and work his socks off. Just what Rafa likes. If he can help one or two lads make it into the first team he will have done his job.
