One-nil down, two-one up 2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit. Clinching three in a row 1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game. Inter trouble 1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match. Finishing second 2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history. Danny at the treble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge bagged his only reds hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Fulham, with Jonjo Shelvey playing his 69th and last reds game. Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side in front with the last of his five goals past us. Managers rewarded 2011 - Kenny Dalglish was re-appointed Manager permanently, leading us to a League Cup triumph at Wembley and 36 wins in 74 games until being sacked a year later. First-team coach Steve Clarke signed a new three-year contract on the same day. 2014 - Brendan Rodgers was named as LMA Manager of the Year after leading the reds to a second-place finish in the League. Beaten in Manchester 1969 - We lost at reigning champions Manchester City, our only other first-class game on this day over the years. Francis Lee struck the only goal of the game, one of his six past us. 1923 – We lost the Lancashire Senior Cup Final 1-0 to City at Bolton Wanderers’ Burnden Park. The English silent knight 1971 - Chris Lawler scored on his full international debut as England thumped Malta 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes also played. 1992 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Hungary. Captain Clem 1981 - Ray Clemence captained England for the only time, in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Brazil at Wembley. Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both also played. Happy birthdays 1996 – Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas was born in Thessaloniki. He signed from Olympiacos for an initial £11.75m in August 2020, playing 59 reds games before his 27th birthday, with his decisive spot-kick securing the FA Cup at Wembley in May 2022. 1900 - Defender Bert Shears was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He played sixteen reds games without notching after arriving from Aberdare Athletic in September 1924, moving to Tranmere Rovers in May 1930. Three for Davey 1978 - David Fairclough scored a hat-trick as we drew 5-5 with Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for ex-red Peter Thompson at Burnden Park. Toffee Duncan Mackenzie added a brace while guesting for the reds. Taylor on target again 1945 - Future reds boss Phil Taylor scored in his third consecutive game, bagging a brace as we trounced Oldham Athletic 7-0 in a Wartime League match at Boundary Park. Bill Kinghorn, George Paterson, Jack Westby, Jack Pilling and Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck. Reg signs on 1959 - Forward Reginald Bore signed a professional contract. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, later that year aged just seventeen, going on to enjoy much greater success at Oldham Athletic, for whom he made over 200 League appearances in midfield. Departures 1911 – Keeper Augustus Beeby left for Manchester City. He joined the club in December 1908, but only made sixteen senior appearances. 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins was sold to Cardiff City, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. He had signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games. 2010 – Reserves custodian David Martin re-signed for MK Dons, having failed to make the first team at Anfield. 2016 - Sami Hyypiä was sacked as Manager of Zürich, having been in charge since the previous August, with the club heading towards relegation. 2022 – Midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Aston Villa from Barcelona for €20m after a successful four-month loan spell. On the same day, former reds winger Mark Kennedy resigned as Assistant Manager of Birmingham City to take over as Lincoln City boss. He led them to 25 wins in 73 games before being sacked in October 2023. Internationals on target 1993 - Future red Sami Hyypiä netted his first goal for Finland Under-21’s as they beat Austria 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Pori. On the same day, Ronnie Rosenthal struck as Israel drew 2-2 with Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier in Sofia. 2009 - András Simon scored for Hungary Under-19’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 to Austria in Telki, with Péter Gulácsi also in action. 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke bagged a brace as England Under-17’s beat Turkey 4-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also in action. 2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever netted as the Dutch Under-17’s beat Belgium 3-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in the Republic of Ireland. Brucie replaced 2002 - Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced as coach of South African side Hellenic, after just five months in charge. Also in international action 1973 – John Toshack faced future red Kenny Dalglish as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 2002 – Ex-red Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Uruguay 2-1 in a friendly in Washington DC. 2011 – Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and future red Emre Can all featured at the Semi-final stage of the Under-17’s European Championships Finals in Serbia. Germany beat Denmark 2-0, with England losing out 1-0 to the Netherlands. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan. On the same day, Bernard Diomède managed France as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in the same tournament. 2017 – Future reds Ozan Kabak and Dominik Szoboszlai faced each other as Turkey Under-17’s beat Hungary 1-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in Croatia.

Two cups on the same day 1982 - We claimed two trophies - the old Football League Cup and the new Milk Cup trophy. Tottenham Hotspur went ahead at Wembley early on through Steve Archibald, one of his six goals past us, but Ronnie Whelan grabbed a late equaliser past ex-red Ray Clemence, before netting a second in extra time. Ian Rush added a third, as Spurs suffered their first defeat at Wembley, and their first loss in nine domestic cup finals. Skipper Graeme Souness lifted the old three-handled trophy, while former captain Phil Thompson held the new Milk Cup aloft. Stevie’s derby treble 2012 - Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick past Everton at Anfield in his 400th League game as we won 3-0, with his third goal being the club’s 300th derby goal. Visiting boss David Moyes was hours from celebrating his tenth anniversary as their Manager, still without having tasted victory at Anfield. On our way to Wembley 1988 - An FA Cup game brought us our best ever result on this day, as we won 4-0 on a muddy pitch at Manchester City in the Sixth Round in front of the live TV cameras, on our way to the Final. Ray Houghton, Craig Johnston and John Barnes all netted, to add to a Peter Beardsley penalty, with Johnston’s strike being our 500th in the competition. This was our seventh consecutive away victory, and the tenth time we had bagged four in a game that season. 1915 - We also beat City when inside-forward Arthur Metcalf nabbed his 28th and last goal for the club. Fred Pagnam and Tom Miller also struck in a 3-2 First Division win at Anfield as centre-half Bob Ferguson played his 103rd and final reds game. Horace Barnes bagged one of his nine goals past us, with Fred Howard netting the last of his nine against the reds, in just five outings. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We won 3-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, following the goalless first game at Anfield. Sadio Mané put us ahead but Joël Matip put through his own net before the break. Virgil van Dijk and Mané both then headed in after half time. Milan in Barcelona 2002 - Milan Baroš made his reds debut as a substitute in our goalless Champions League draw with Barcelona in the Camp Nou. This result left us needing to beat Roma by two clear goals at Anfield to be sure of a place in the Quarter-finals. Nick Barmby came on as a late replacement for Steven Gerrard, his 58th and final reds appearance, although he sat on the bench on a further five occasions that season. Emile in front of his old boss 2003 - Emile Heskey drew us level at Martin O’Neill’s Celtic after Henrik Larsson had put the Hoops into an early lead. This UEFA Cup Quarter-final first leg tie ended 1-1, but was marred by El-Hadji Diouf spitting into the crowd. Unfortunately, the Scottish side won the Anfield return 2-0. Mixed derby outcomes 1979 - Andy King scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as we were held in this derby encounter. Kenny Dalglish bagged our goal on his hundredth reds appearance as well as suffering an injury, along with Phil Thompson and David Johnson. 1994 – Dave Watson headed the visitors in front in the 150th League derby before Ian Rush struck just nine seconds after the re-start. Robbie Fowler then netted to secure a 2-1 win, Roy Evans’ only victory over Everton as boss. Fowler’s goal was the last derby strike in front of the old standing Kop. 1988 - We took part in a testimonial match for the Blues’ legendary centre-half Brian Labone. John Toshack struck as Everton won 2-1 at Goodison Park. Red one-offs 1909 – Forward Dick Allman made his only reds appearance as we lost 2-1 to Bristol City at Anfield in a top-flight encounter. Tom Chorlton nabbed our goal from the spot, his eighth and final reds goal, with Willis Rippon bagging a brace for the visitors, including a penalty. 1920 - Keeper Tom Armstrong played his only reds game as we drew 2-2 with The Wednesday at Hillsborough in another First Division fixture. Dick Forshaw and Donald McKinlay struck within the last ten minutes. Incomings 1896 – Half-back Barney Battles arrived on loan from Celtic. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for just six weeks, featuring in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. On the same day, Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn signed from Blackburn Rovers, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. 1969 – Left-back Alec Lindsay signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000. He netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year, before leaving for Stoke City in September 1977. Tons up 1976 – Steve Heighway played his 300th reds game as John Toshack appeared for the 200th time, with Phil Neal scoring the only goal of our League game at Birmingham City from the spot late on. Goalscoring beginning and end 1929 – Centre-half David Davidson bagged the first of his two reds goals late on as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield after eight games without a win, with John Lindsay also on target. Vic Watson bagged one of his nine goals against the reds. 1993 – Don Hutchison scored his tenth and last goal for the club, opening the scoring as we won 2-1 at Middlesbrough in our last trip to Ayresome Park. Steve Nicol put through his own net, with Ian Rush bagging a late winner. Making an exhibition of themselves 2007 - Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Bolo Zenden all played for a Europe XI who lost 4-3 to Manchester United at Old Trafford, in a game played to celebrate the fiftieth anniversaries of the Treaty of Rome and Manchester United in European competition. Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf bagged a brace, including a penalty. Nice one Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Bury 7-2 at Gigg Lane in a game that counted for both the Wartime League and the War League Cup. Michael Hulligan added a brace, with our other goals coming from Jack Pilling and a Griffiths own goal. Red farewells 1897 – Inside-left Davy Hannah played his 33rd and last reds game as we drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at their Perry Barr ground. 1926 - Fred Baron bagged his seventh and final reds goal. Harry Chambers was also on target as we lost 3-2 at Sunderland in a top-flight encounter. Donald McKinlay missed a penalty, while Dave Halliday scored two of his thirteen goals past us, with Jack Prior also on target. 1958 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley was sold to Third Division side Tranmere Rovers, for whom he continued to score at a rate of one goal every other game. He had bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. 2010 – Keeper Charlie Ashcroft died. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Disappointment at Bramall Lane We have twice lost First Division fixtures at Sheffield United on this day in history. 1954 - Billy Liddell netted our consolation from the spot, his hundredth reds strike, as we lost 3-1. Geoff Twentyman put through his own net, with Joe Shaw and Sam McNab also scoring for the home side as Bob Paisley featured for the 277th and last time. 1965 - We went down 3-0 to send us down to ninth in the table. Alan Birchenall struck one of his four goals past us, with Barry Hartle and Alan Woodward also on target as keeper Tommy Lawrence played his hundredth League game for the reds. Reds keepers in opposition 1920 - Two reds keepers faced each other in an international as Ken Campbell played for Scotland, who beat Ireland, for whom Elisha Scott was making his international debut. The game ended 3-0 at Celtic Park, with fellow red Billy Lacey also playing for the visitors. 1922 - England beat Wales 1-0 in an international at Anfield. Tom Bromilow played for the home side on his club ground. Off on loan 2003 - Jon Otsemobor joined Third Division Hull City on loan. He bagged three goals in nine games for the Tigers before returning to Anfield. 2007 - Centre-back Godwin Antwi joined Accrington Stanley, for whom he made nine League Two outings. 2009 – Former reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Leicester City on loan from Hull City. He played four times for them as they progressed towards the League One title. For the last time 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins played his seventh and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Preston North End. Harry Holdcroft saved a penalty from the reds’ Tommy Cooper in the first half. Alf Hanson then converted a spot-kick after the break. Vladi on target 1996 - Vladimír Šmicer netted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Spain in a European Championships qualifier in Granada. On the same day future red Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 1-1 friendly draw in Luxembourg. Souey’s debut 1974 - Future red Graeme Souness won his first cap for Scotland Under-23’s as they lost 2-0 to England at St. James’ Park. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 3-2 at Derby County with Robbie Fowler on target, once from the spot. Deon Burton netted for the Rams before Paolo Wanchope bagged the last two of his four goals against the reds. 1996 – Wimbledon held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Steve McManaman and Stan Collymore struck our goals. Efan Ekoku scored for the visitors before Dean Holdsworth nabbed one of his four past us. 1971 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City with John O’Rourke pouncing after Ray Clemence had pushed a free-kick onto the post. Also in international action 1988 – Ex-red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they beat Taiwan 5-1 in an Olympics qualifier in Sydney. 1991 – Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland in their 1-1 friendly draw in Poland. 2008 – Future red Mamadou Sakho played for France Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Germany in Reutlingen. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić featured as Serbia Under-19’s beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0. 2015 – Future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 4-0 defeat of the Republic of Ireland in Hoorn.
