Trouble with this line of thinking is this: 1. We probably wouldn't get £40M, but for the sake of argument let's say we manage to get £30M, which is at the top end of what we're likely to receive IMO. 2. Of that £30M you have to take off agent fees,paying off contracts etc. 3. When you're buying these new £10M players again, you have to factor in agent fees, signing bonuses. 4. Wages - Mascherano isn't on a huge wage - and the wage bill of 4 £10M is going to be vastly higher. Summary: The money won't go that far - it certainly wouldn't let us purchase four £10M players.

That's not really an answer though is it? Nobody said that the two things were mutually exclusive. The question was why you thought TB's conclusions were lazy not whether it was possible that they could be. You seem to be implying that he has simply made an assumption about these players possibly/probably leaving without having actually received any concrete information (directly from the players or otherwise). That seems to be counter to what he's been saying on his webcasts.
