I think the Edwards algorithms thing is overplayed. The Ian Graham book said he actually didn’t like data and preferred watching videos. We got lucky with a fair few decisions back then - we only got Ali because Karius chucked it in his own net in the CL final otherwise Chelsea would have got him. We only got Robbo because Mendy didn’t clear the personality check and we couldn’t get Emerson from Roma so he was 3rd choice (they were concerned he wasn’t good defensively but Klopp said he’d use his attacking talents). Very nearly didn’t go for Mane over personality concerns. A lot of sliding doors moments but it all came together. Feels like the opposite has happened this last 12 months.

We had a fair few injuries but we covered them up well. Ali played half a season but no one really cared as we had Kelleher. Trent was out a lot, Konate, Jones and Gakpo missed games and players who would play games elsewhere missed big chunks of the season (Jota, Chiesa, Elliott, Bradley). I think our squad was better than Arsenal’s that season. We had 5 strong forward options and always players who could come off the bench.

We shouldn’t be selling anyone right now with the squad as it is. We had a league winning squad and instead of building on and refreshing it we’ve systematically dismantled it. Gakpo and Diaz rotating at LW and covering the central forward position helped win us the league. Neither are in decline yet but next season neither will be here. It’s gonna be another s*** season let’s face it. Even if we somehow signed the 5 or 6 we need they would need time to adapt. They would have needed to be on the tour or at least coming in for next week.
