Barton admits team-mate assault Joey Barton initially denied the assault Premier League footballer Joey Barton has admitted assaulting a former team-mate in a training ground row. The Newcastle United midfielder was due to go on trial at Manchester Minshull Crown Court over the incident. The 25-year-old changed his plea and admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) shortly before the scheduled start. He attacked Ousmane Dabo during a training ground row on 1 May last year when both played for Manchester City. £5.8m signing The trial, which had been due to start more than a year after the alleged assault, was put back until after the season had ended for the convenience of witnesses. Many of the them are involved in professional football. Liverpool-born Barton was sold by City to Newcastle in a £5.8m deal last summer. Dabo, 31, is now playing for Rome side Lazio. It is the third time Barton has been in court during 2008. His time at Newcastle must be up beeb

Torres played much better when he was on his own up front and Fabregas was given the Gerrard role and was able to latch onto balls much more - in my opinion that is!

Spurs plan to thwart Pompey with £15m deal for Crouch and Benayoun By John Edwards Last updated at 11:44 PM on 25th June 2008 Comments (0) Add to My Stories Juande Ramos has joined the bidding for Peter Crouch and is ready to launch a £15million double offer for the unsettled Liverpool striker and his team-mate Yossi Benayoun. Still fearful he may lose Dimitar Berbatov before the start of next season, the Tottenham manager has earmarked Crouch as a ready-made replacement and put together a package he believes will give him the edge over Portsmouth counterpart Harry Redknapp. While Portsmouth offered an initial £7million, with £2m worth of extras to follow, Tottenham are prepared to pay the full £9m asking price for Crouch and a further £6m for former West Ham midfielder Benayoun. Tottenham’s proposal carries the greater appeal for Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who is eager not only to do business with his fellow-Spaniard and close friend Ramos but rake in desperately needed funds to finance his own transfer plans. Redknapp still feels he is in pole position, though, after a clear signal from Crouch that Fratton Park remains his preferred destination. The England striker has even indicated he would sooner see out the 12 months left on his contract than be forced into a move against his will and Benitez may have to wait while Portsmouth raise the additional cash to match Tottenham’s bid. With goalkeeper Scott Carson a target for Middlesbrough and Xabi Alonso edging closer to a move to Juventus, Benitez could soon have the financial muscle to follow up his long-running pursuit of Gareth Barry and more recent interest in David Silva. The bidding for Aston Villa midfielder Barry looks like topping £15m, while Valencia winger Silva will cost almost as much after his emergence for Spain sent his value soaring. Redknapp has persistently refused to be hurried into meeting an opening valuation on Crouch of around £12m and is confident he is now close to landing the out-of-favour Liverpool marksman for £9m at the most. As he attempts to build on last season’s FA Cup success, Redknapp is also considering trying to hijack Roma’s negotiations with freed Liverpool winger Harry Kewell and has been linked with a move for Strasbourg midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, as well as confirming his interest in Reading left-back Nicky Shorey. Kewell was thought to be close to reaching an agreement with the Serie A club but is sure to consider any opportunity to extend his injury-blighted career in the Barclays Premier League. While Crouch’s arrival would be seen as further evidence of Portsmouth’s growing ambition, it may not be welcomed by Nw***wo Kanu. The Nigerian has held off agreeing new terms since January because he believes he deserves another two years. But the presence of Crouch would strengthen Pompey’s hand in negotiations. ‘I cannot sign for just one year when I have done so much for the club,’ said Kanu. ‘Winning the FA Cup and playing well during the season should qualify me for more than a one-year extension.’ Mail Sorry I would be made up by this especially as all my Spud mates constantly go on about how crap he is and they are glad they got rid of him when he was in their yuf team

Benitez risks civil war by demanding £50m transfer kitty By David Maddock 24/06/2008 (What's this?)Rafael Benitez will risk more Anfield aggro by demanding £50million for big-name transfers. With peace just settled after a year of bitter infighting at the club, Liverpool boss Benitez will gamble it all by asking for a new fortune. He wants to buy Spain superstar David Villa, Brazilian Daniel Alves and Valencia's Spanish winger David Silva - as well as Gareth Barry from Aston Villa. It could spark another civil war on Merseyside and is a huge call by Benitez, who almost lost his job last year when he spoke out against the transfer restrictions imposed on him by the club's American owners. The row spread throughout Anfield, leaving the manager's ally Tom Hicks and George Gillett at each other's throats and chief executive Rick Parry fearing for his position. But with Gillett brokering a peace deal with Hicks - and accepting that the pair must invest in the future - Benitez feels he can now flex his managerial muscle to demand more signings. The Spaniard will try to offset some of the required cash with sales but it is a risky strategy, because if it threatens the uneasy alliance between Hicks and Gillett then it could undermine the whole future of the club. Benitez is convinced he must act - or Liverpool will never challenge Manchester United and Chelsea for the title. He has made two signings so far, the free-transfer capture of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen and £7million Italian defender Andrea Dossena from Udinese. But it is the next three stars he reckons will shape the future of Liverpool at a cost of around £50m. He has virtually done a deal to bring Barry to Anfield for around £15m, but wants to spend even more on wide players. Top target on the left is Silva, who has starred in Spain's run to the Euro 2008 semi-final. But he will not come cheap with Valencia demanding £20m. Benitez is also interested in Villa, but until now assumed he simply would not have the funds to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona. The other Valencia star has already shown his ability to form a devastating partnership with Fernando Torres. Villa and Silva together would cost at least £35m. Benitez will attempt to appease the Americans by selling Xabi Alonso to Juventus for £15m, along with the £4m sale of John Arne Riise to Roma, plus a raft of other unwanted players. Mirror Villa and Silva together would cost at least £35m. And the rest Maddock!
