Mascherano better than Gerrard? Do me a favour. Gerrard can do things with the ball that Mascherano could only dream about. Mascherano himself admitted in an interview that he used to be a striker when he was younger, but as he moved up the ranks in Argentina he realised he wasn't good enough and remoulded his game to what it is now. Mascherano is excellent at what he does, one of the best in the world. But it's a limited role. He's in the side to stop the other team play. That's why he played so well against Arsenal the other week. He's a stopper. He's like a Makelele, Deschamps, Hammann, Gattuso. They are vital to the best sides, but they need the Gerrards, Zidanes and Kakas of this world to play with them or else they don't look nearly as good.
