I think part of the problem here is that, as a nation, England is a very guilty nation. We try and blame everything on ourselves. It cuts through our social fabric. It's why we are so hopeless at winning things at sport - for some reason, English competitors rarely have the drive and self-belief to do it, and when they do they are often slated by everyone else - and it's why so many people are insecure, and feel the need to act tough abroad or in town centres at night and so on. Almost every country at the World Cup had a hooligan element - Croatia and Poland were particularly nasty - but that goes largely unreported in this country and in their own country. England, however, has that guilt and feels necessary to bash ourselves because of it. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's okay. But we need a bit of perspective when looking at these things. You can't say "oh, but they are other countries so it doesn't matter"... well if that's the case, why should we be bothered when we go to these "other countries" and start smashing them up? It's not the English disease. It's the human disease.
