He signed nine of the fourteen players that played in Istanbul. Whatever else they had done in their Liverpool careers up to that point, surely that victory was justification enough to have signed them.
Wasn't this the era of the foreigner rule in Europe, where teams could only field three non English players. I think this contributed to Souness deciding to sell a lot of decent players such as Staunton and Houghton. It still doesn't excuse the mess he made of the overall job but he was put in an awkward position because of that rule.
The echo has the same story but a different headline. Just goes to show what kind of spin newspapers can put on things. I've done enough for new deal, says Fowler
Sky sports were reporting this morning that Roeder will be doing his coaching badges this summer, with the implication that the job was his if he wants it. Maybe Ged is coming in as director of football.
I never said he wasn't a very good player. All I was pointing out was that he hadn't played well in the qualifiers. England scored 17 goals and he scored none. For a forward/striker that is a poor return.
Rooney does not play the Dalglish role for England. He is there to score and, admittedly to a lesser extent, create goals. To this end he has, in my opinion, failed in the qualifying games.
And what did he do in the qualifiers exactly to mark him out as world class ? He is a striker and the last time I checked the main role of a striker is to score goals. Check my previous posts to see how many he contributed. He failed to score in the champions league for the mancs as well this season as far as I am aware. So in the two most prestigious competitions he was involved in this season he has scored zero.
Did a bit of checking and Rooney played in 7 of the qualifying games without scoring. England scorers : Lampard 5 Owen 3 Gerrard 2 Beckham 2 Cole 2 Defoe 1 Own Goals 2 I think looking at that England are definitely screwed without Rooney.
I think it was in the Sunday Times that one of the reasons Curbishley left Charlton was that he was devastated when Parker left and then when he turned down the chance to come back when he left Chelsea. It was suggesting that Curbishley knew he had taken the club as far as he could when Parker joined Newcastle. He's a decent player but surely not that important.
He was the first player I thought of as well when they got relegated. Sent a text to another forum member at around ten to five Saturday saying we should bid for him that night. Would be an excellent signing if we could make it happen. Thanks for the info.
He has an Irish granny and in the Jack Charlton... er sorry Steve Staunton era this means you must declare for Ireland. Chris Hughton has already approached him.
