maybe i didn't make myself clear. the blame obviously lies principally at one man's door. what souness did wrong is a given. kenny leaving early is a given. what i am saying, and i idolised/still idolise king kenny, is that he (i) should have recognised the need to rejuvenate earlier, as almost all of the first team regulars were 29 years old or older when he left, and started to recruit more than just redknapp to phase in replacements, and (ii) he made a few cack purchases at the end. the squad was so old though that there was a serious regeneration problem arising that would be difficult to tackle. even with bob's big change of the 80s, we had a nucleus of hansen, souness and dalglish that stayed the same, players who would have been earmarked as coming through the system - lee, whelan - as good enough, and a slow acquisition of good youngsters - rush, johnston, nicol, etc - over a period of time. we did not have that with kenny - the only young player i can recall he had recruited externally was redknapp, although mcmanaman and fowler would have been on his radar. the extent of regeneration required created a surmountable problem, but one which souey was incapable of overcoming. King Kenny's still a god, but we are myopic if we dont accept there were mistakes in kennys reign. sometimes i feel its all too easy to demonise souey and not attribute ANY criticism to others...
