ANDERSON NETS WINNER FOR RESERVES

Paul Anderson scored a fine goal and Francisco Duran made his debut as Liverpool Reserves deservedly beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Thursday night.

Spanish youth international Duran played in the midfield holding role and made a pleasing contribution in the hour that he was given. He is very comfortable in possession, is two footed and has a good eye for an opening.

 

Anderson scored the only goal of the game after 62 minutes when he met a right wing cross and produced a great finish when he smashed the ball into the roof of the net. The winger hasn't been at his best this season but this goal will do his confidence the world of good and he had an excellent match.

 

Emiliano Insua played his second reserve game at left back and also had a comfortable night and was eager to get forward and provide width. Fellow Argentine Gabriel Paletta was also handed a start alongside Miki Roque at centre half and they were rock solid figures at the back.

 

Youth Cup striker Craig Lindfield led the Reds attack alongside Moroccan Nabil El Zhar with Dutch striker Jordy Brouwer on the bench.

 

Liverpool made a bright start to the game and could have been 2-0 up inside the opening three minutes when the lively Anderson twice went close. He fired one effort over the bar and then ran clear of the Bolton defence but pulled his effort wide.

 

Bolton had their moments as well in the first half and winger Zoltan Harasanyi was a threat down the left wing, and three times he came close to scoring.

 

Liverpool had a great chance after 29 minutes when Duran found himself in space on the edge of the Bolton penalty area. He could have shot for goal himself but instead unselfishly fed a lovely through ball into Lindfield's path. The striker fired a shot across the face of the goal but unfortunately Nabil El Zhar could only turn the ball over the bar.

 

Liverpool Reserve team manager Gary Ablett made his first change of the evening after 62 minutes when former Ajax man Brouwer came on for Duran.

 

Liverpool continued to look the more likely side to break the deadlock and sure enough the Reds patience eventually paid off when Anderson gave Ablett's side a deserved lead after 62 minutes.

 

Overall there were a lot of positives for Ablett to take from this performance. Liverpool competed well, played as a team and weren't afraid to put their foot in when the need arose. Danny Guthrie and Lee Peltier controlled the midfield and both players were excellent.

Took a trip up the road to watch the reserves in action against Bolton. On a cold but clear night there were one or two newer faces being fileded and it was a chance to put a face to a name and get an early look at our future stars. The one name that stood out for me was Emiliano Insua. Playing at left back he settled into the game very quickly and gave a flawless performance. He has a quality about him and is very assured on the ball. The lad has pace and can certainly head a ball, added to this he loves to attack and crosses exceptionally well.

 

Guthrie had one of his quieter games and seemed off the pace a little. Other names that stood out are Paletta and El Zhar, the former looked strong and coped with everything that Bolton had very well. El Zhar has pace in abundance and is very skillful on the ball. He loves his tricks and uses them at the right time.

 

Over all the game was relatively uneventful with very few chances. One altercation towards the end saw one of the Bolton centre halves flatten the tiny El Zhar. Guthrie took exception to this and immediately put the fella on the floor with a Gerrard like challenge It resulted in a bit of a brawl and certainly warmed the few people that made the trip.

 

The goal came from a run from El Zhar who threaded a ball to the onrunning Guthrie just inside the box to the right. Guthrie passed a defender and crossed the ball to the left for the onrunning Anderson who finished in a similar fashion to Riise the other night.

Ace name that, El Zhar. And good to hear that Insua has stood out again.

 

This Duran fella, Chelsea's been bending my ear trying to entice him to the dark side with their roubles. So it was on FM2007 but this I must say is a particularly encouraging sign.

Duran played and is a very skillful player also - played for about an hour. He is not a tackler and didnt get involved that much. When he is on the ball he looks assured and can pick a pass, he doesnt have burning pace but is not slow either. Likes the ball at his feet and can use it. could be a good prospect.

Gary Ablett was full of praise for Spanish youth international debutant Francisco Duran as he helped the reserves to a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers on Thursday night.

Duran played for 62 minutes and was comfortable in possession, showing many of the attributes that persuaded Rafael Benitez to bring the player from Malaga to Anfield.

 

"Francisco is a good player and he did well in his first game for us," Ablett told Liverpoolfc.tv.

 

"He is settling in along with our other new boys like Jordy Brouwer, Emiliano Insua and Ronald Huth who couldn't play because he was ill. It's a massive step for the young boys who have come from all around the world to play here and they are living with new families in a new environment, but full credit to them. They have tried to settle in as quickly as possible and we have a good group of players in the squad.

 

"Overall I thought it was a very difficult game and we had to cope with Bolton's direct style for the majority of the game. Francisco apart, we didn't pass the ball particularly well and I thought it was one of our poorest performances of the season with the ball. We got the result though which was the important thing."

 

The Reds' reserve team boss had words of encouragement for Paul Anderson who netted the only goal of the game midway through the second half and produced one of his best performances of the season.

 

"It was a great positive start to the game for Paul as he was taking on the full back and making chances for himself," added Ablett.

 

"He scored a very important goal for us and I'm pleased for him. He's got to maintain and improve those levels and if he can do that who knows where that may take him."
