Happy birthday Gini
1990 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum was born in Rotterdam. He moved to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016, notching 22 times in 237 games and helping us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup before he moved on to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in July 2021. Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland on the same day as they won a friendly 2-1 in Tunisia.
2005 – Scottish winger Ben Doak was born in Dalry. He signed from Celtic in March 2022, making his senior bow against Derby County in the League Cup eight months later and turning pro later that month. He made eight senior appearances by the time of his eighteenth birthday.

In comes Tosh
1970 - John Toshack signed from his hometown club Cardiff City for a club record £110,000. He scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, the FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978.

Joe’s treble
1905 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored his first of his five reds hat-tricks as we won 5-1 at Middlesbrough, our biggest ever win on Teesside. Inside-forward John Carlin added a brace. Joe’s brother Charlie, who later joined the reds, struck for the home side.

Double century for Kenny
1980 – Kenny Dalglish played his 200th reds game as we beat Coventry City 2-1 in a League fixture at Anfield, thanks to a David Johnson brace.

Still a red
2003 - Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He remained a red, until May 2015, scoring 186 times in total in 710 outings and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece.
2020 – Left-back Owen Beck signed a new contract, having turned pro just four months earlier. He joined the Academy from Stoke City at Under-13’s level, making his senior bow as a late substitute in our League Cup Fourth Round win at Preston North End in October 2021.

Most recently
2012 – We drew 1-1 at Chelsea, with John Terry nodding the home side in front in the first half, before Luis Suárez equalised after the break.
2018 – We beat Fulham 2-0 at Anfield with Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri netting either side of half time. On the same day, future red Harvey Elliott played for England Under-17’s in their 2-2 draw with Germany in the Republic of Ireland, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge.

England reds on target
1987 - John Barnes and Peter Beardsley both scored in England’s 4-1 European Championships qualifying win in Yugoslavia. Gary Gillespie, Steve Nicol, future reds coach Steve Clarke and ex-red Ian Rush all also featured in qualifiers on the same day.

Mixed fortunes against Rangers
We have twice faced Queens Park Rangers in First Division matches at Loftus Road on this day in history.
1978 - We won 3-1 thanks to Steve Heighway’s 76th and last reds strike, his fiftieth in the League, and goals from Ray Kennedy and David Johnson after Peter Eastoe had put the home side in front with one of his four goals past us.
1989 - We lost 3-2 with John Barnes netting a brace for the reds, including one from the spot. Paul Wright struck twice, including one from the spot, with Mark Falco also on target for the R’s.

Birth and death
1955 - Winger Jack Cox died of a heart attack in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. He signed from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897 and struck eighty times in 361 reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship in his nine years at Anfield. He returned to the Seasiders to take over as Player/Manager in May 1909.
1996 – Winger Ryan Kent was born in Oldham. He made just one senior reds appearance, in our FA Cup Third Round trip to Exeter City in January 2016. He was sold to Rangers for £7m last September after a successful season on loan.

Disappointment against the Cockerels
We twice played Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight on this day in the early part of the last century, without scoring a goal.
1911 - We were beaten 2-0 at White Hart Lane, with keeper Sam Hardy playing his 200th League game for the reds. Billy Minter netted one of his five goals against the reds, with Bert Middlemiss also scoring.
1922 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Mixed fortunes against the Mancs
We have twice lost to Manchester United on this day in history.
1967 - We went down 2-1 at Anfield with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation. George Best struck two of his seven goals past us as Ian St. John played his 300th reds game.
1972 - We lost another top-flight meeting 2-0 at Old Trafford, with Wyn Davies and ex-red Ted MacDougall on target.
1944 - However, future reds boss Don Welsh scored a hat-trick as we beat United 5-2 in a Wartime League game at Maine Road, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell also netting.

Quasi on the move
1998 - Peter Beardsley signed for Fulham from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer, following two loan spells at Craven Cottage that year. He racked up a total of 28 appearances for them, scoring seven times.

Ex-reds in charge
2004 - Bruce Grobbelaar was appointed Manager of South African side Umtata Bush Bucks. He only spent four months there before resigning.
2021 - Steven Gerrard left Rangers to take over as Aston Villa boss. He was sacked in October 2022 after winning thirteen of his forty games in charge.

Beating the Irish
1895 - The reds thumped an Irish Internationals side 5-1 at Anfield. Frank Becton bagged a brace with Thomas ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw, Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross all also on the scoresheet.

First and last caps
1970 – Future red Peter Cormack won his first cap as a Nottingham Forest player as Scotland beat Denmark 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. Ray Clemence and Larry Lloyd both played for England Under-23’s on the same day in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Sweden in Hull.
1997 - Dean Saunders won his last cap as a Nottingham Forest player, his 61st in total, as Wales lost 3-0 to Brazil in a friendly in Brasilia. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured.
1999 – Future reds keeper Pepe Reina debuted for Spain Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Ghana in the World Championship Finals in New Zealand.

2020 – Kostas Tsimikas won his first cap as a reds player as Greece beat Cyprus 2-1 in a friendly in Athens. On the same day, Sadio Mané scored from the spot in Senegal’s 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Thiès. Diogo Jota, Naby Keïta, Xherdan Shaqiri, Gini Wijnaldum, future red Ozan Kabak, and ex-reds Ryan Babel and Simon Mignolet all also played for their countries that day.
2001 - Nicolas Anelka won his 27th cap, coming off the bench in France’s 1-1 draw with Australia in Melbourne, his final appearance while with Paris St. Germain. Meanwhile, future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil both played for England Under-19’s as they beat Hungary 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Barnsley.

2011 – Harry Kewell played for Australia for the first time while with Melbourne Victory, skippering them as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Oman, with Alberto Aquilani winning his last cap while on loan at AC Milan as Italy beat Poland 2-0 in Wroclaw, with future red Mario Balotelli notching his first senior international goal. On the same day, Krisztián Németh won his only cap as a MTK Hungária player as Hungary thumped Liechtenstein 5-0 in a friendly in Budapest, while Ryan Babel played his first international while with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as the Netherlands were held to a goalless draw in a friendly in Amsterdam. Daniel Agger, Dirk Kuyt, future reds Ádám Bogdán and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Alou Diarra, Javier Mascherano, Raul Meireles and Christian Poulsen all also featured in internationals that day.

2021 – Tyler Morton won his first cap for England Under-20’s as they lost an Elite League game 2-0 in Portugal, with Leighton Clarkson also playing. Alisson Becker and Fabinho faced future red Luis Díaz as Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in São Paulo. Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino, Kostas Tsimikas, future red Wataru Endō and ex-reds Marko Grujić and Nikolay Mihaylov also played for their countries that day.
2017 – Elijah Dixon-Bonner debuted for England Under-17’s as Curtis Jones captained them in a 2-1 friendly defeat of Russia in Burton, with Bobby Duncan also featuring as ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge. Future red Thiago and ex-reds Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas also played for their countries, with Alberto making his senior international bow as Spain thumped Costa Rica 5-0 in Málaga.
2016 – Future red Cody Gakpo played for the Dutch Under-18’s for the first time as they were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland in Spain.

Internationals on target
2016 – Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge both netted as England beat Scotland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with ex-red Martin Škrtel scoring while captaining Slovakia to a 4-0 defeat of Lithuania in Trnava. Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling both also played that day.
2011 – Luis Suárez bagged all four goals as Uruguay beat Chile 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. On the same day, ex-red Robbie Keane netted a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland thumped Estonia 4-0 in a European Championships qualifying play-off in Tallinn, with future red Ragnar Klavan on the losing side.
2015 – Klavan skippered Estonia as they beat Georgia 3-0 in a friendly in Tallinn.
2005 - Anthony Le Tallec scored for France Under-21’s past Scott Carson in a 1-1 draw with England in the first leg of their European Championships play-off at White Hart Lane, with future red James Milner also featuring. A crowd of 34,494 were at the game, a then record for an England international at this level.

Steven on the move
2005 - Former reserves forward Steven Gillespie rejoined Cheltenham Town on loan from Bristol City. He eventually signed for them permanently in January 2006 and grabbed 28 goals in 83 games for them before moving on to Colchester United in July 2008 for £400,000.

1992 – We beat Sheffield United 3-0 in a League Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Steve McManaman bagged a first-half brace, with Mike Marsh converting a late spot-kick.
1961 – Kevin Lewis struck as Luton Town held us to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division encounter in L4 with Gordon Turner scoring the last of his five goals against the reds late on.
1950 – We drew 2-2 at Huddersfield Town with Billy Liddell and Phil Taylor netting.

1933 – We beat Leeds United by the odd goal in seven at home. Bob Done and Alf Hanson scored, with Sam English on the scoresheet twice. Arthur Hydes struck one of his four past us, with Alan Fowler also scoring and Harry Duggan nabbing one of his five against the reds.
1899 – Inside-right Johnny Walker was on target as we drew 1-1 at Newcastle United.

2016 – Academy Manager Alex Inglethorpe signed a new contract, having been in that role since moving up from Reserve Team Head Coach in 2014.
