I was away to a few Asian countries this past week on business and while in Thailand (Bangkok) I walk into a packed pub to watch the LFC-Villa game. Right across me there's a four fat and heavily tattooed 40-50 year old English lads, all wearing Sheff. Utd shirts, sitting and I wont repeat the s*** that came out about LFC from them. It got SO much worse when at one point the were yelling some s**** like "Hillsborough whores", or something in that direction and I turned my back to them a revealed the print "Justice 96". They kind of went a bit quiet on that occasion, but after a few minutes they were at it again....

To be honest I didn't know there was any bad blood between LFC and Sheffield Utd, but perhaps that's because of my age, so can anyone fill me in on this....?? Or was it just four a*****s having a tasteless laugh... never got to be any violence, but there was hate in the air that's for sure....

I'm guessing they were just w*****s.

They're hillbillies, that's the problem.

A few idiots in a distant bar shouldn't taint your view of all of them but the problem is that it's still 1973 in Sheffield as evidenced at the League Cup semi a few years ago. They were picking off kids and scarfers and there were a few chants that I hadn't heard in years.

Neil Warnock, God help us.

There were some problems between us and them in the Lge Cup semi in 2003. The Kop were singing "Warnock, Warnock what's the score?" and he V-signed them. Henchoz spat in his direction after the game.

Warncok is a loon. He'll be in trouble after every game next season for slagging off the refs, especially after they've been mullered again. Can't wait.

I read an article a few years back about the coverage of Hillsbrough in Sheffield. The blame is still diverted away from their constabulary onto the mythical 'drunken hoardes'

They did a study on the perceptions of Hillsbrough around the country, in Liverpool, Manchester and general northwest 99% thought the SYP were to blame. In London it was about 75%, in Sheffield it was only 50%, with the rest blaming Liverpool fans.

I'd dispute the figures if they said 99% of people in the northwest think the SYP were responsible. Go and talk to people in workplaces and in pubs in manchester, you'll find loads of people who think we 'killed our own' etc. I've heard it many times over the years, even when challenged with the facts in the Taylor report they repeat their suspicions.

I was near their fans one time and when Liverpool went 1-0 up, our fans in the Main Stand were singing "One-nil one nil" and several of theirs went, "95-1, 95-1" (this was during the time Tony Bland was still alive). I pointed this out to the stewards who watched their reaction when we went 2-0 up and they saw them singing "95-2" so they got the police involved and several of them were thrown out.

It was a few years ago, 5 or more, that I read the article, I cannot remember the exact figures so was trying to give the general gist. The bits that stuck in my head.

It was not grouped as the northwest, it was like Liverpool 99%, Manchester 98%, etc, etc. It was also before all the nastiness between us and scum escalated again. I definitely remember Manchester having the highest figure apart from Liverpool and I remember London / South East having the second lowest around 75%, the point being that Sheffield was so much lower than the rest of the country.

It depends on when the report was compiled. In the couple of years post-Hillsborough there was genuine support for the truth of what happened that day. The trouble is that idiots have changed that perception: supporters of other Clubs, Boris Johnson, Worsthorne and other Tory or southern-based hacks. Remember that Scousers have always been fair game for the establishment-they couldn't say what they say about us if we were a distinct ethnic group (although I think I am!). I think many people still don't like to show support for the City of Liverpool.

It's probably a fairly predictable thing that the people of Sheffield did not like the accusation that their own were to blame for the Disaster and they have had some lies purporting to be the truth to help bring them to the conclusion that it was our fault.

You only have to make a comparison across the park: I would never have believed that fellow Scousers would gleefully chant "Murderers" at us. But in 1989 after Hillsborough (and post Heysel) they were magnificent. It seems that the younger clowns are the worst and the reality is that they probably don't even recall the events.

There's a Sheffireld Wednesday fan in our office- (Twot of the highest order) but aside from that, he says the footie mentality is totally different over there in the land of sheep. Apparently footie totally devides the city of Sheffield and there is a genuine hatred by and to each set of fans. He finds it amazing that there are fans of both Everton and LFC in the same families.

This however is only aimed at the respective neighbours and he assures me that there is no particular malice towards Liverpool over there.

Sounds like you were just unlucky to stumble into some prize bellends!!

We were in Sam Dodds that night, window smashing by the morons ...

After the game, surprise surprise, their coach windows took a bit of a beating

It boils down to the semi-final a few seasons back. The Sheffield police, used to moron fans from the football league coupled with their aggressive approached to anyone supporting Liverpool caused a lot of bad feeling. Their fans are one step up from Stoke City's. The adverts for Volvic water is filmed in Sheffield and Stoke and the extras in it are wearing their own clothes.

And then we come to Warnock, he is a t*** of the highest order, nicey nicey when interviewed in a studio but is a total c*** around the football ground. If he was a fan he would be on a banning order the amount of times he's been dismissed from the dugout.

Finally, I had the displeasure of being right amongst their fans for the second leg, ignorant, a******s, smelly c****, burberry wearing pricks doesn't even begin to describe them. I would rather be with 6,000 Mancs at Anfield than 6,000 Blades, that's how bad I feel.

And you're there with them. ;)

Terrible police force ( i was once stopped in the street whilst running with shopping bags for a train - they took me back to each shop because they thought i'd stolen something were bored ) but it's a decent city.

Every club has d**khead fans, every city has it's " locals " .

Gomez, Bob,

I know things change over time, fully appreciate that. i remember talking with Everton fans and they were absolutely brilliant to me at the time.

By the mid nineties I was working in Manchester and had things said to me like. 'Its funny how its always Liverpool isn't it. It was Heysel and then Hillsborough' To which I obviously objected as strongly as I could. then they would come back with ' It was all your fans pissed and turning up late that caused it'

I've avoided those sorts of conversations since because its painful but i've heard it a number of times over the years to know that even if its a minority viewpoint its a pretty large minority in Manchester.

I work in Manc so have first-hand experience of this. Being supportive of Scousers never came naturally to Mancs but decent ones did support us (and have continued to do so) after Hillsborough. But there are plenty of idiots and they will perhaps be sympathetic for a while then revert to type. I don't remember the Munich Disaster but my uncle told me the whole country was in mourning, quite rightly so, yet a few years later morons are singing songs and doing aeroplane impressions.

People are stupid. And people from hillbilly towns who've spent years in the lower Leagues don't inspire confidence that the mould is being broken. Burnley, Stoke, Sheffield, Barnsley, Wolverhampton and all these places are a nightmare.

I agree with everything you say there. The problem is it takes effort not to be ignorant and huge numbers of people all over the country can't be bothered engaging their minds. An advertisers dream, a tabloid newspapers dream audience.

I was there for the last match. Horrible atmosphere outside and very unfriendly. Basically they are very down market fans.

My dads a blade but hasn't gone the match for years apart from the odd occaison.

I've been to Bramall Lane with him a couple of times and it's always seemed alright but I've heard so many reports of them being c**** in the Worthy Cup it's obviously not hear say.

I'll be going Bramall Lane next season I should imagine, balaclava job maybe?
