If Chelsea go out in the second round of this competition it damages their European standing - if they go on to win it it increases it. Makes it easier for them to tempt Shevchenko and Adriano to Stamford Bridge. They have only really secured one proven world class player thus far. Barca roundly beating them will continue to make it difficult for them to look like European giants and will make our league progress next year a little easier as well as keeping our trophy haul above theirs in Europe. I can't see how, even practically, backing Chelsea is a good thing.

yes but barca players do things like bacheels and nutmegs and 15 pass moves and that goes against everything John L stands for. You can't expect a man to sacrifice all his principles on a whim.

For me the equation goes. I hate chelsea. I want chelsea to lose.

Not very complicated i know but heartfelt nonetheless. Imagine losing to chelsea or chelsea winning anything. it's too horrible.

Barcelona are also our rivals for European trophies so the argument about Chelsea enhancing their squad on the back of European success applies to them as well.

It would hurt a lot less to see Barcelona lift another European Cup than to see Chelsea lift their first.

Only your hatred of Cruyff's footballing philosophy could blind you to that.

That IS the greater good! ;)

More seriously. Barcelona are also our rivals for European trophies so the argument about Chelsea enhancing their squad on the back of European success applies to them as well.

disagree. barcelona are not our rival in terms of european trophies, we've won comfortably more than they have. we're chasing madrid now.

Well that's true - although you wouldn't know it given the respect Barcelona (European Cup winning equals of Aston Villa and Red Star Belgrade) seem to command - even from Liverpool fans, FFS.

But what I meant was that Barcelona are among our rivals for future European trophies, including this season.

neither are Chelsea by the same token.

Unless Man U are involved, i look at these things from a Liverpool perspective - and i think it increases are chances of retaining our trophy for Chelsea to knock Barca out.

But to be fair, you're almost as much a Chelsea fan as John is.

I'm a much bigger Chelsea fan than him

I also think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves in thinking that Chelsea will be an easier team to get through than Barcelona.

i'm just going from the psychological hold we seem to have on them in Europe

4 matches and they can't score - gotta be worth something, no?

why so?

1) barca's defence and goalkeeper are not a patch on chelsea's

2) rafa knows them well and knows how to play against them.

just a feeling that we'd stifle them and have the weapons to beat them over two legs. i don't think for a second that we'd beat chelsea more easily than we could overcome barca.

one game at a time accepted of course.

I am concerned that that is being overplayed they were lucky to score the goals they did in the league last season and they beat us comfortably in the league this. They also beat us in the Carling final so I am not sure I see why playing them in Europe is that different. But for Gudjohnson missing that opportunity, which on another day he would have buried Istanbul would not have happened for us.

records also have a habit of being broken
