Apparently there'll be 16 teams taking part (Spurs, Brum, Stoke and Fulham not involved) with the teams split into 3 groups

A: United, City, Wigan, Newcastle, Bolton

B: Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn, Blackpool, Sunderland

C: Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Villa, Wolves, WBA

Still only 19 games though which is pathetic.

we need to get the younger lads out on loan.i'm sure teams like stockport, tranmere, rochdale etc could use the players. have them train with us once a week or whatever. use the ressies for fringe first teamers and those in the 1st team squad not getting regular football. when the big inquest goes on as to why England f***ed up badly at teh world cup and why no younger lads are getting a chance, it wont be the shambolic ressie set up that gets teh blame. it will be pesky foreign players

How utterly, utterly pointless. Am so surprised that clubs don't seem bothered about this. Of course maybe they are bothered but are just too busy to do anything towards creating some sort of consensus for a sensible plan, but either way, only 19 games is just awful. With the size of squads (and with youth players often being involved with the reserves) it makes no sense not to double the amount of games. Even if it's kept even more local to avoid travel costs etc.

blame? you mean the credit?

Don't know whyb we don't send our resssies to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe when they are looking for friendlies during their domestic league breaks.

I think they should do national service

The weakness of the reserve league is a major problem for English football and Liverpool in particular. It used to be the feeding ground for LFC. Play the youngsters and new recruits in the reserves for a couple of seasons, teach them the lIverpool way and eventually bring them into the first team. But these days because there are so few games ( I think last season the reserves cos of the weather went about six weeks without a game) the young players never get much chance of playing against half decent reserve sides on a regular basis.

So I welcome a bigger league with more games. It'll help the young English players as well as all other young players,

i know i've said this before, but i cant understand why the ressies dont play their league immediately before the 1st team.

say we play spurs at 3pm on saturday at Anfield. well at 11am, the ressies could have their match at Anfield, people with match tickets could get in early and watch the game if they wanted to.

That sounds great but I doubt if the pitches would stand up to two games on the same day.

It's a joke with so many clubs in the north west that there isn't a really vibrant and exciting reserve team league and scene.

There's enough to have 2 leagues with promotion and relegation. If they priced it right it would get a good following.

Either that or they should just let the stiffs play in the real lower leagues.

If they made it a condition of the Sky deal that they had to show a reserve game or two every week and if Sky gave it their customary hype you'd see crowd numbers rising dramatically. There are some fantastic players at that level but they're hampered because there's also some awful muck who don't give a s****. That won't do anything to increase the amount of games but maybe if more people watched it they'd see how farcical the set-up is and something would be done about it. Rafa got destroyed for saying the set-up should be more like Spain's but he was right, there needs to be more emphasis put on the reserves, at the moment it's almost like a nuisance to have it. It should really be a 20-team-league. If the smaller clubs can't afford the travel then don't let them in the Premier League.

if premier league teams, with the amount of money floating about, cant afford £400 once a fortnight to hire a coach, then quite frankly, they shouldnt be in business

Well there's the stadium as well but you're right, it's a nominal cost. Money was the reason they scrapped the u17 and u19 teams and moved to one u18 team at academy level though. We'll still get the old "too many foreigners" line thrown about when England fail this year and still nobody with influence will ask if that's the cause of English youngsters not being good enough or the effect of it.
