OK, there has been numerous debates on here about Rafa and our transfer policy, so to end speculation and false statements I've decided to summarise Rafa spending season by season and show how our squad in 2005 has blossomed into the one we have now in 2009. The figures I have quoted are accurate and I think some people will be quite surprised when they see them. Have a look, if anyone sees any obvious mistakes point it out for us and I'll make the corrections.

Just on a side note, Gerrard and Carragher are not included in this list because they are players Rafa inherited and will be staying at the club for the foreseeable future. Thanks to a poster on RAWK who had the original inspiration to present Rafa's transfer dealings in this way. Spread the word, stop the media bull****.

Odd how we believed for year that we had grown a world class centre mid and yet that ios the position we have spent the most on...

He's not bad at right mid, either

he was probably counted among the strikers then too to be fair.

No I never included Kuyt in the Strikers, ok he was bought as a striker but his main role/position has been right midfield so I stuck him in that category.

El Zhar joined in October 2006.

OK but he has been more of a mainstay in the first team squad this season....that's why I only included then.

I see. However he did make his debut in Nov 2006 against Portsmouth in the League. At the end of the day he is/was only 3rd choice right wing for us, then or now.

I'm impressed with what you've done on this, takes some time. :applause:

It's pissed me off too the amount of innaccuracies that get spouted by the media - and I was working on something myself - but based not only on transfers fees but wages as well. I think that if you combine both the annual spend of the big four and assorted other big spenders (Spurs/Newcastle/Aston Villa etc) you get the complete picture of the financial chasm that Benitez has to fight.

Anyway much appreciated the info you've posted.

It's interesting to look at the net spend position-by-position as well

Goalkeeper +£3m (From Dudek & Kirkland to Reina, Cavalieri & Itandje)

Left Back +£0.8m (From Riise, Traore & Warnock to Aurelio, Dossena & Insua)

Centre Back +£13.1m (From Hyypia & Henchoz to Hyypia, Agger & Skrtel)

Right Back +£1.75m (From Finnan to Arbeloa & Degen)

Left Midfield +£19.3m (From Kewell & Smicer to Babel, Leto & Riera)

Centre Midfield +£24.95m (From Hamann & Biscan to Alonso, Mascherano & Lucas)

Right Midfield +£18.9m (From Diouf to Benayoun, El Zhar & Kuyt)

Forward/Striker -£1.2m (From Baros, Cisse, Mellor & Sinama-Pongolle to Ngog, Torres & Voronin)

Suprised that Forward/Striker is the lowest net spend (the only one in profit) despite Keane - would have thought it would have been one of the highest

Don't think there's any position where we've paid over the odds to get from where we were to where we are & we have actually paid under the odds in a lot of them IMO

Although there's a bit of deadwood & a few who might not make the grade & he's made some mistakes along the way, overall I think Rafa's done a brilliant job, especially considering that almost the entire squad needed overhauling when he arrived, he has had a limited budget & he inherited a lot of deadwood that he couldn't get much/anything for. One thing I particularly like about Rafa when it comes to transfers is that he is very quick to recognise when a new signing isn't going to cut it & ship them out.

good work but a couple of things

carson wasn't signed on a free - about .75m I think

Leto +Gonzalez only 3.3m between them? I thought it was more, maybe not

Carson was £1million and Pepe was £6million = £7million in total. Leto was £1.8million and Gonzalez was £1.5million = £3.3million in total.

Nice one mate.

Worth pointing out also that net spend is only just over £1mill a season more than Villa and £2mill a season more than Sunderland !

Good work. Should forward this to all the football journalists you can, so they at least think twice before spouting this crap, papers, sky, radio. etc

What makes the £80million value quite amazing it is less than the Mancs spent on getting Berbatov, Rooney and Ferdinand! (£30.75million, £27million and £30million respectively) Whole squad vs 3 players....boggling.

not a useful comparison without their net spend though. anyone got the value of their sales in the same period?
