So you're called in a board room meeting to explain the merits of your manager(which has happened to me)

got a board of financers heads to turn. Over to you and keep it simple. (All hypothetical of course and I'm just interested)

You won't get fired for your answers Mr. Doe!

So Rafa...

3-0 down at half time?

Playing devils advocate if it wasn't for Finnans injury we wouldn't have made the sub we did that night with mostly Ged's team!

Just fishing.

had we lost that shootout, i reckon Rafa would now not be our manager

I'm not sure, tbh. Apart from the "concentrating on coaching my team" & Klinsmann incident (when it rightly gave him some clout) I doubt he's been in danger of the sack.

I think he's done enough every season to merit a "we're on the right lines" belief. Any manager needs time (if not a five-year plan) and winning the FA Cup & getting to 2 CL finals and a Carling Cup final is probably more than we dare ask of his replacement (in warm-up terms before winning the league).

When would he have gone; 05? 06? 07? 08?

However, I think had we lost that shootout he certainly wouldn't be our manager come the end of this May.* That belief of "being on the right lines" was possibly right but we've been derailed big-time.

*we'll probably win the fecking treble now just to make me look silly

Not really - Rafa told Traore to get dressed for Didi to come on, but had to change when told Finnan couldn't carry on; so either way, a Full-back off and 3 at the back.

Cisse was coming on for Traore according to Carra's book.

it's not just enough to be a so called tactical genius in a game like football, you have to be lucky as well as being able to get the most out of the tools/skills at your disposal.

you need that little bit of luck to go your way when your tactics have been sussed out, or, your tools/skills have been dulled by over use or some other factor you cannot control.

there isn't a sport, or other occupation, where you can get by on tactical genius alone.

rafa may well be on his way to getting close to being a tactical genius, but right now he's over thinking things and we are suffering as a result.

True, but there is no suggestion that Rafa's subsequent change of mind to go 3-5-2 with Didi coming in and surround Pirlo was due to Finnan's injury; Cisse replacing Traore would still have meant 3 at the back, and could have still been deployed whichever Full Back stayed on

Whether the win in istanbul was due to the tactical genius of Rafa, the determination of the players, or pure luck, only a clueless idiot (I am not naming any names UB) can claim that we would have beaten Juventus, Leverkusen and Chelsea if it wasn't for the manager

Is right, by all means point out his faults but by the same reasoning you have to point out his strengths.

(imo his strengths far out weigh his weaknesses)

without doubt, just look where we are now (disappointed to being third 2 points behind united, in the CL knockout and probably favourites against Real madrid!) to where we were in the last season under GH (battling for fourth place against Newcastle!, and dumped out of the uefa cup to Marseille)
