Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Real's Champions League bid rejectedhttp://www.setanta.com/uk/Articles/Footbal...ted/gnid-34599/ Uefa have rejected Real’s request to register both Lassana Diarra and Klaas Jan Huntelaar to play in the Champions League. The regulations state that only one player who has already played in Europe this season can be registered, but the La Liga champions appealed claiming they had a ‘different interpretation’ of the rule, and Uefa’s disciplinary committee have now rejected their request. Dutch striker Huntelaar and Diarra played in the Uefa Cup for Ajax and Portsmouth respectively prior to moving to Madrid on January 1. Part of a Uefa statement read: “The European body confirms that this was rejected in accordance with article 17.8 in the competition regulations which states that only one player who has played Uefa club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered. Any appeal to this decision will be heard next week.” Real are likely to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Ethan Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 RM are desperate - this season's CL could be their only chance of qualifying for next season's competition.
Mike Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 why should they even get one registered? what are the exceptional circumstances?
Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 why should they even get one registered? what are the exceptional circumstances?i think you're allowed to register one additional player in the january window aren't you? assuming you also remove a player from the squad to accomodate them. i imagine madrid's defence of exceptional circumstances went something like 'ah go on, we paid f***ing loads for them both. and we're real madrid'.

Clubs are allowed to register 3 different players in their 25 player squad by 1 Feb, only 1 of whom can have played in the UEFA Cup http://www.uefa.com/multimediafiles/downlo...60_download.pdf (pars 17.17 & 17.18)
Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Is Sami going to get a look in?don't think he can can he? because of that homegrown / home trained player ruling? actually if we signed heskey he probably could.
Jarg Armani Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 don't think he can can he? because of that homegrown / home trained player ruling? actually if we signed heskey he probably could. How's that then?
GWistooshort Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Is Sami going to get a look in? UEFA's regulations require 8 players to be “locally trained”, of which 4 can be "association trained" & 4 can be “club-trained”. To qualify as “association trained” a player has to have been registered with a club or with other clubs affiliated to the same national association as that of his current club for a period of 3 entire seasons or 36 months between the ages of 15 & 21. To qualify as “club-trained” a player has to have been registered with his current club for a period of 3 entire seasons or 36 months between the ages of 15 & 21. Our squad for the group stages had the following 8 "locally trained" players:Jamie Carragher Stephen Darby Steven GerrardRobbie KeaneMartin Kelly Steven IrwinJermaine PennantJay Spearing See the full squad at http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/club=78...on=1/index.html I guess Sami could possibly come in for Skrtel, depening on how his comeback from his injury goes? Otherwise, if we keep Pennant & bought Heskey in the window, he could replace N'Gog in the squad, allowing Sami to replace one of the youngsters, probably Kelly.
Gomez Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 did we do it with skrtel last season? And Masch the year before don't think he can can he? because of that homegrown / home trained player ruling? actually if we signed heskey he probably could. So at what point would Sami become 'naturalised'? He's been here 10 years. That's longer than fabregas who is considered 'home grown' despite being nothing of the sort.
Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 How's that then?seem to remember us sticking a homegrown kid in the squad in place of sami to meet the uefa quotas. if we signed heskey now, who is british homegrown, put him in the squad could we then swap the kid out for sami?
Bailo Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 i imagine madrid's defence of exceptional circumstances went something like 'ah go on, we paid f***ing loads for them both. and we're real madrid'. That's definitely it. "Different interpretation" my a***.
GWistooshort Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 So at what point would Sami become 'naturalised'? That doesn't happen under these regulations seem to remember us sticking a homegrown kid in the squad in place of sami to meet the uefa quotas. if we signed heskey now, who is british homegrown, put him in the squad could we then swap the kid out for sami? Sign Heskey & swap him for N'GogSwap Sami for Martin Kelly/Steven IrwinKeep Pennant
Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Sign Heskey & swap him for N'GogSwap Sami for Martin Kelly/Steven IrwinKeep Pennantcouldn't we just as easily swap pennant for another one of the kids? neither of them would play in the CL either way.
GWistooshort Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 couldn't we just as easily swap pennant for another one of the kids? neither of them would play in the CL either way. You're right, we could
Paddy 66 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Put Sami in for Degen, he's never fit so a waste of a space.
richwilks Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Put Sami in for Degen, he's never fit so a waste of a space. Think that's the obvious answer. We have Arbeloa, Carra and Darby who can play right back. Worst comes to the worst we can stick Gerrard there.
MarkD Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Going back to the title of the thread, you can imagine Platini finding a way for this to happen. RM - "Michel, can we play both of them?" MP - "Non" RM - "But we've paid a lot for them, we are struggling in La Liga" MP - "Non" RM - "OK. suppose that makes the Liverpool the favourites in our tie then" MP - "Liverpool, you say? Of course you can play them both. Maybe even a dispensation to get Kaka into your squad on loan for that period too if you wish".
yuriska Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Put Sami in for Degen, he's never fit so a waste of a space. I think that is exactly what will happen. If we get rid of pennant and sign heskey it will be like for like swap (homegrown for homegrown) in the CL squad.
Stevie H Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Think that's the obvious answer. We have Arbeloa, Carra and Darby who can play right back. Worst comes to the worst we can stick Gerrard there.the very thought of that now is mental. bet kuyt could do a job there like.
Hassony Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 the very thought of that now is mental. bet kuyt could do a job there like. Heskey is the man for the job
GWistooshort Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Put Sami in for Degen, he's never fit so a waste of a space. Excellent suggestion
carrafan Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Degen for Insua.Bring in Hammill (or Heskey) in for Ngog and replace Pennant with big Sami. Edited January 9, 2009 by carrafan
