Why is Alonso telling that Rag anything?

that why start a thread about it?

Because if any of our players are qouted as having told that rag anything then surely it is not something we should be happy about and just accept?

This is gone over time and time again, yet people still believe the player has spoken to a specific paper?

C'mon.

Must we do this every few months?

Xabi is at a press conference.

Someone asks question.

Xabi answers it.

Evil newspaper runs "Xabi Alonso told us that..." story.

Someone makes thread about it on here.

Rinse.

Repeat.

You mean the rag would try and pass off someone's quote as an exclusive?

Never.

Xabi's quote will have been in the public domain and the rag will have included it in a story and passed it off as their own story. It happens all the time.

the interview he gave AS ...

Football is a crazy sport, this past summer you were almost sold and now you’re irreplaceable…

- These are the circumstances. I never had any doubts about being a useful player for Liverpool, even when I was close to being transferred…I’m already the fourth oldest squad member after Carragher, Gerrard and Hyypia. Who would’ve thought that?

But you told me in Copenhagen (back in August) that you had your doubts.

- There was so much talk about Juventus that I was uncertain about the team’s start to the season and my degree of involvement, but I knew that if I stayed I would play for this team.

Besides, now you have more of a free role, since Mascherano stays back and you can more around better.

- With Mascherano, yes, he tends to maintain his position more, but with Gerrard, I’m the one who stays back. I prefer to play as a classic midfielder, staying in the center and providing balance.

Liverpool are better than ever…

- Yes, we have that sensation. We feel quite comfortable and have a good understanding. We’ve lost the odd match because sometimes we lack that killer instinct. Torres has been out for a few games and we missed his firepower. And Fernando is precisely that, firepower. This is Benitez’s fifth season and it’s logical that the team is more refined.

Winning the Premier is an obsession after 18 years…

- There is a very strong will to do so and that could be dangerous too.

In Spain there is a bit of controversy about Benitez, there are those of us who value his work and those who consider him to be too defensive minded…

- I’m aware of that. Footballers make the team. Their qualities are fundamental. With our qualities we must play a certain way. Rafa is adamant about teamwork. It’s the basis. If we were truly so defensive we wouldn’t win as often as we do. We’re progressively keeping more possession, forming a better understanding but the difference is that, instead of passing the ball around in midfield, we rapidly look for open spaces up front. Liverpool are not a team that like to elaborate play the way Barca, Arsenal or the national team do. We like having the ball and we often do but then our way of attacking is a different one. Yet we create a lot of chances and get many shots. The statistics confirm this. There are many ways of playing good football and the manager is the one that has to find the one that will get the best performance out of the players he has available. We start from a very solid defensive concept but we like to go forward and often.

In the national team it’s a different matter…

- It’s different because with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Cesc, Senna…it’s easy to play football and understand each other. With these players it would be a sin not to play this way. We all enjoy playing for this national team. You can see that when we play. We’re all compromised and identified with this style of play. You couldn’t ask for more. At Liverpool we don’t have these types of players. I would always love to play the same way we do with the national team but I also enjoy myself playing in Liverpool. The important thing is to read the games properly and to do what needs to be done at all times. There, we try to recover the ball quickly to catch the opponents out of place. Sometimes you can play too many short passes and fall asleep. This is something that Del Bosque warns us against…

Do you have a hard time adjusting to the different styles of play? Could you, for example, play right now for a Spanish club or would it be difficult?

- It would depend on the team, I don’t think I would have major problems, but it would take me some time to adjust. The styles of play are completely different, also the attitude and the referees. In La Liga, teams tend to have more quality and that doesn’t scare me. In the Premier there are still many teams that like to play box-to-box. Besides, I still don’t consider myself a pure Premier League player.

You’re 27 years old and your contract ends in 2012, if you didn’t leave this season you might never leave…

- You never know. What I do know is that I’m well in Liverpool. I strongly identify myself with the team, the city and the people. The Juventus alternative appealed to me very much. A new city, new country, language, a different style of football. I like new experiences.

Come back to La Liga, you could do a huge favour to many clubs…

- (A smile for an answer) There is a lot of talk, but…

its a translation (spanish > english) so theres a bit of freedom to be creative but essentially the rag once again are full of s*** and the muppets at sky failed to properly research ... shocking :hooked:
