I can't ever bring myself to believe these stories of players taking pay cuts

I don't think it was a case of paycut from what he was earning at atletico, More that he would have got more at Inter Milan/ Man city/ Chelsea

It has to be ultra rare, but probably happens on those very few occassions when ambition to win gets the better of straight cash.

As I understand it he took a drop of around £15,000 a week in wages (as opposed to his Atletico wages and not what he would have earned elsewhere) and also waived his right to a percentage of the transfer fee which was due to him in order to push through the deal.

The percentage of the transfer fee he waived equalled out to around £3 million.

Just adds to his legend status at the club.

I've no doubt that if he has another season like last season he'll be given another contract level with Gerrard next summer.

Reports of it are not ultra rare, they're ultra common

I don't think it is as fantastic as it sounds. You are basically accepting a lower wage now in light of the prospects of potentially much higher earnings later on, in addition to fulfilling footballing ambitions, etc.

Aren't players wages in spain tax free?

Think that was the thing was Torres' wages at Atleti. He was on about the same nominal wage as he is here (£90,000 approx), but he received his tax free in Spain.

Did Benayoun not take a pay cut to come here as well?

No he didn't. But he was offered more than he earns here to stay at 'Racist Pub Team'

I think it sounds completely fantastic

I worry about how he survived on only 74k a week, instead of the 89K he was getting. He really must have had to tighten the purse strings this season.

But there have been others who've left clubs or held them to ransom for a new contract because the big bucks they earned werent enough.

Ultra rare?

"Is that the new thing now, is it?"(you probably won't get that)

Says something about his character for me.

And the unbelievable pressure he was under there as their talisman, a position that many seem to forget that Gerrard must be under every time he dons the red shirt.

As for his wages, you could add another 50 grand and he would be worth every penny.

Why? It's not like the immediate additional earnings are needed right now - He's already in a sufficently secure position where it's very much viable to accept a shortterm loss at the prospect of a much greater longterm gain.

We're dealing with a player who is, at any rate, romantic enough about his homeclub to have rejected the overtoures of the Spanish big two. If the terms he was offered was simply 'you will take a cut', I could see how it sounds unlikely but if the terms are 'you will need to prove yourself this season before we will make you a top earner here', then I don't consider it that fantastic for a player who is coming from an obviously smaller club with no CL experience, etc.
