Matthew Norman's Media Diary

Alas, poor Kelvin, we feel your pain

So alarmingly do fears for Kelvin MacKenzie's well-being intensify that some form of intervention must be imminent. It isn't that Kelvin's latest Sun column lacks startling originality. With lightning raids into such virgin territory as tax-avoiding Gypsies, hyper-fecund underclass scroungers and the ghastliness of Heather Mills, he shocks and amazes all over his page. What is distressing is the increasing evidence of dramatic memory loss (you may recall the posited connection between the heavy snoring to which he's a martyr and early-onset Alzheimer's).

For example, the old boy observes in one paragraph that he has considerable doubts that he wants his country led by posh boys like David Cameron and George Osborne, adding in the very next that a growing Tory poll lead "will cheer me up no end". This isn't good. Nor is the befuddled railing against the anonymity granted to criminal defendants aged under 18. "Why shouldn't this scumbag be named and shamed?" he asks, somehow failing to remember that under British law it is for a jury to decide – as Lord Denning put it in R vs The Scum of the Earth – "who is, and indeed who is not, a scumbag".

Worse still, is the unending befuddlement over Hillsborough. Kelvin seems no closer to resolving the fierce internal battle over whether or not he regrets blaming Liverpool fans for the tragedy. Where once he sincerely apologised to a Commons select committee for modern journalism's most calamitous misjudgement, now he openly taunts Liverpool fans by reporting playing golf with former midfielder Ray Houghton, adding a glibly ironic, "I'm sorry about that Anfield."

It isn't for me to declare anyone mentally incapacitated, after the fashion of Kelvin's diagnosis of Tony Benn. Even so, this reads much less like a column than a cry for help. Who will answer it?

I've not got a lot of time for Houghton but if he's really been playing golf with that c*nt he's in the f*cking gutter.

I'd play golf with MacKenzie.

No, really. I'd literally play golf with him.

Houghton is a c*nt of the highest order, anyone who watches him on RTE will tell you that. I hate him more than any other pundit, he's worse than Nicholas, Merson and Gray because he was a Red. He should know better.

This does not surprise me one bit.

I wrote to the Director General of the BBC and the Chairman of the Board of Governors when McKenzie appeared on the Apprentice for Sport Relief. Also wrote to both of them when he got a slot on Radio 5 a couple of years ago. No swearing or ranting, just facts and a complaint. Alas no reply.

He is a total c*nt of the highest order and needs to be removed completely from the mainstream media.

Hmm, he does talks with Irish LFC supporters groups near the end season and I'd love someone to hit him with that anvil of a volley.

Apart from Sir Robert of Ticktout Bridge Charlton he's the biggest shill in football.

Come on, Houghton would do ANYTHING FOR MONEY. He always was and is completeley driven by cash. He was a good player, but I've no time for money mad monster

It could easily be a charity golf event or some such, where partners aren't chosen, rather assigned.

I don't like Houghton much but it may not have been him and MacKenzie swapping texts about who should arrange the tee time.

Still not an excuse, he could have easily refuesd to play or change partners (assuming that this was the case)

do you think Rush or Dalglish would have played with that c***?

Maybe they weren't even in the same fourball. Merely at the same event.

MacKenzie is clearly well able to distort fact for his own ends.

But I am not overly bothered about defending Hougton's standing, just pointing out that anything MacKenzie says should not be taken at face value.

Agree with this, it doesn't automatically mean that the two of them were playing side by side. However, I wouldn't rise to it - the c*nt obviously likes the publicity that he manages to garner by being "controversial". F*ck him, I sincerly believe that he will get his at some point.

Agree with you 200%

He is a complete c8nt of the highest order and has NOTHING good to say about Liverpool, and I mean NOTHING. He must have been seriously pissed off by somebody at the club, but he is a c8unt!

This is coming from someone who loved him as a player for both Liverpool and Ireland, but I hate seeing or hearing him now.
