Should Rafa be criticised

When the crowd does exactly the same ?

There is no doubt about it but the support the team gets on European nights is far far better than the support for other games.

We have 28,000 Season Ticket holders, I would love to know the take up rate for cup tickets because these fans are not the same or they are prioritising the CL games over others to support the team.

If only our league games had half the support the team did on Tuesday night.

Here's to a library against Boro :(

I'm not having this as an excuse for league form Kev, I know thats not what you are saying but some will and they did in the threads after the Inter match.

Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea get no better support for their league games.

spot on and Tony Barrett makes exactly the same point in his Echo match report of the Inter game.

I don't read reports from the game, just look at the pictures :)

The Kop was always the 12th man ages ago, it was the 12th man against Chelsea (x2), it was the 12th man in Istanbul. The crowd does lift the players as well as put them down.

Would the team play better with support like Tuesday each game ? I think they would.

It would be fantastic

The support has always been a lot better for the big European games or the big fixtures in the league.

How would you go about making it that good for the other fixtures ?

Its 2 sets of fans that do my head in. Theres the daytrip crowd who line up in groups of 4 or 5 in matching brand new scarves and hats bought for their special day and don't know the songs or have any bond with the rest of the fans. Theres also the more regular match goers who can't be arsed to sing.

Its no worse than Old Trafford though, they manage on the pitch.

The Liverpool fans pride themselves on being the 12th man on occasions like these, when they turn Anfield into that much fabled cauldron of noise and atmosphere which is so revered throughout Europe.

But when it comes to the relative mundanity of a bog standard league game, Anfield is so quiet it often seems the crowd is saving itself for something special.

And herein lies the problem which has bedevilled Liverpool for far too long. Far too many people at the club, both on and off the pitch, are far too easily distracted by the big occasion.

It is an attitude which makes Liverpool a cup team and one which makes it almost impossible for them to mount a serious title challenge.

Benitez would never dream of resting his best players for a major European tie and the fans would never contemplate resting their voices either.

As a club, Liverpool are guilty of dreaming of Europe when they should be thinking of home and everyone who belted out You'll Never Walk Alone as if their lives depended on it before last night's game should bear that in mind when Gerry Marsden's finest is played over the tannoy before Saturday's Premiership clash with Middlesbrough.

Only when domestic chores are treated with the same importance as foreign adventures will Liverpool be able to become a force at home again.

Chicken and egg, isn't it? Do the players not give the fans enough, or the fans not give th eplayers enough?

There's always a tension and an expectancy around the leage games too, no doubt that transmits itself to the players.

Snorky I have been banging on about this issue myself lately and I think it needs to be considered by all those who say they want the league before the CL.

It's simple, if you are more passionate about the league then prove it.

I think it's shamefull. I'm sitting here in Denmark dying to go to a game. And believe me, if I got a seat at Anfield I wouldn't stop screaming and chanting no matter who the opposition was, or what the score was.

At Brøndby Stadion, at the Faxe Tribune, which is the Brøndby equivalent of the Kop, the supporters club have a motto saying: " Syng eller Skrid" (translated - Sing or f*** off) I might sound harsh, but those who do not want to sing can sit in the family section, and let us do the ambiance. The worst thing is, with tuesdays support in every home game. I strongly feel that Liverpool could have won a couple more game. Hands down.

OK, but the team hadn't even kicked a ball on Tuesday and the hairs on the back of my neck were rigid.

Instead of looking for fans standing, insteading of looking for fans smoking, instead of looking for fans drinking I want to be looking for fans not singing and getting them thrown out :)

you've got a microphone & PA system, why don't you lead the singing?

You've not heard me sing have you :nono:

Yeh I know what you mean. Supporting us is like a marraige, sometimes you lead other times you get led.

That would set a precedence for future behavior.

But seriously, at Brøndby a lot of work has been put in this campaign. Flyers for every game for the last six months, stating the motto and the rules of those who chose the faxe tribune, we fans also has some obligations. We need to provide the support for our boys when they aren't playing their best. We need to drive them forward. I might not scare the opposition, but it does strenghten our team. And that mentality should be communicated to every paying ticket holder for every home game. Gerrard wouldn't be able to hide as he has done a lot of times, if his name was sung constantly.

And the worst thing is, that when Anfield is buzzing, there is no better place in the world. I can't understand why you guys wouldn't want it every time you play. If not for the team than at least for yourselves.

I'm not having this as an excuse for league form Kev,

I don't think anyone is using it as an excuse for league form (well not Kev anyway, Tony Barrett seems to be), but it does raise an interesting point. We question why the players seem to be so much more up for big games, but we don't question ourselves. I've heard it said a few times 'the players should approach all games the same' but the fans don't do they??

I was talking about it after the Inter game.

Its desire. They want the Champions league win more. They want to prove themselves on that stage, manager and players. You need something else to motivate the players in other, ordinary fixtures. If we could get the crowd raising the roof in every game, great i'm all for it. But I don't see how thats realistic, you have too much of the crowd there to passively watch. If the players need something to lift them for these other games it'll have to be something else IMO. They should be scared of going in the dressing room after some of the performances and scared of losing their place to an understudy in the squad or the reserves.

The 'problem' is that the game is played by human beings.

Talk of being able to get as 'psyched up' for a game against Barnsley as you are for a game against Inter is ridiculous, whether you are a player, fan or part of the management team.
