vish Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/i...als/7218296.stm Should be an interesting read...
Hassony Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Its amazing that he hasn't picked a 32 years old who has managed to play 45 minutes of competitive football since may
Cobs Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 disgraceful the way Capello hasn't capitulated in face of direct orders from the FA to pick him any word on who's going to be captain?
stressederic Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 No doubt Fleet Street is going into meltdown as we speak.
Tosh Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Its amazing that he hasn't picked a 32 years old who has managed to play 45 minutes of competitive football since may But he has a new tat and can play keepyuppy all by himself.
Murphman Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 A 10 minute run out off the bench to clinch his (deserved) place among England's elite. If it wasn't for the ginger clown McLaren this wouldn't even be a story, not too much to ask surely?

If it wasn't for the ginger clown McLaren this wouldn't even be a story, not too much to ask surely? why does he deserve it? i thought the whole point of bringing in someone like cappelo is to pick players on merit, Beckham retired from football when he agreed to move to america, If he wanted to get his 100th cap he should have stayed in spain or came back to england!
Rimbeux Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I really hope he doesn't pick Almunia So do I, it will currently be against the rules no?
Rimbeux Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 A 10 minute run out off the bench to clinch his (deserved) place among England's elite. If it wasn't for the ginger clown McLaren this wouldn't even be a story, not too much to ask surely? If it wasn't for him getting that cheeky booking it would be moot... The bloke hasn't played a football match for months, is currently on a commercial tour, and there are at least two players who deserve a place in the squad on the right, and first dibs at impressing the new manager. It's supposed to be about winning football matches, not marketing or photo ops, something that has been sadly forgotten this decade.
Cobs Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Beckham doesn't merit a place in this squad and i'm not sure he'll merit one playing footy in America but i wouldn't begrudge him getting 100 caps
Woodsyla Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Beckham doesn't merit a place in this squad and i'm not sure he'll merit one playing footy in America but i wouldn't begrudge him getting 100 caps Exactly, that's why I'm delighted that Capello's first move is to drop him. He recalled him at RM when Beckham proved himself so it's up to Beckham to do the same again and he ain't going to do that unless he plays some real football. Personally, I think Beckham is finished, by the time he gets himself fit, other, more deserving players will be above him in the pecking order (SWP, Lennon, Bentley, Young etc)

Guest Kaizer Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Henning Berg got his 100 match for Norway in a friendly against Wales in 2004, he played the first 20 minutes and was then substituted.
Cam Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I find it funny that he'd have passed the 100 mark but for those times Ferguson convinced him to pull him out of the squad. And for that deliberate booking. He only has himself to blame.
Rimbeux Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Not convinced by Carson and Kirkland, but there's hardly a massive gene pool. Same with the strikers.

He deserves it because he's David Beckham aged 32 , this isn't Tom Finney, 99 caps is a barstard of a benchmark, arguably he was the best player on show against Croatia, the fans would love the occasion and even if he's not 100% fit enough he's still better than most of them out there. To deny him his 100th cap and his (mainly young kids) fans is plain misery bolllocks behaviour.
PhilM Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Beckham doesn't deserve a call up. He's shown just how seriously he really takes football by his move to America. He could have done that three or four years down the line and no-one would have criticised him for it, but he did it when he still had genuine life left in his football career.

Murphman Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 should pick robbie williams, i am sure his fans will be pleased! and he was s**** (apart from one cross) against croatia, crouch was the only decent player out there Oh aye. Robbie Williams, great comparison. Whether you hate England or love them, 99 caps is a fantastic achievement, Capello should learn from history with Taylor and Lineker. It's a friendly against Switzerland FFS, play him!!
Billy Dane Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Odd but I find myself agreeing with Murph. It's at the new Wembley, give him his 100th cap and in doing so Capello gets the feelgood factor, gives a nod to the past and then takes him off and moves onto the future. It's only a friendly, the only people this game means anything to is Beckham and Capello.
Guest Linton Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Can't see why people hate Beckham when playing for England. He is one of few players who always gives 100% IMO. He should get a last cap just to reach 100. And I think he will.
Cam Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 He'll get to 100 simply 'cos the FA need him as a figurehead for the World Cup-hosting hopes. And despite my earlier bitterness I kinda hope he does. We'll see very few players get to 100 in this modern game in our lifetimes now and, although I'm no England fan, the occasion and even razzmatazz is exactly the things fans should be indulged in.
Gomez Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Pennant? Pennant of 12 months ago deserved a place in the squad, certainly against those listed (and downing!). Now, not so much. Though to be fair he has been injured for a while, even if he was suffering a dip beforehand. (do we have any players not suffering a dip now?) I am glad Capello didn't pick beckham, I really don't see the point in picking anyone who will not be there for the WC in 2010. We have to build for that and forget about sentiment and tabliod wet dreams.
