UNDER 18S IN FIVE-STAR DISPLAY

Paul Hassall 12 December 2007

Liverpool got their defence of the FA Youth Cup crown off to a flier on Wednesday night with an emphatic victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Hughie McAuley's side dominated throughout what was a very one-sided third round tie and secured a 5-0 victory courtesy of goals from David Amoo, Nathan Eccleston (2), Gary MacKay Steven and Marvin Pourie.

Stay tuned to Liverpoolfc.tv for full match reaction.

This is the first time in a long time that we have actually had so many good young players coming through the system. Wether its just been the demanding work of Rafa or not in recruiting these top young players, the system that has been played to develop them, or just if we have been lucky to have a great crop of youngsters, is nothing but positive.

Those kids up there that have been named have all looked great this season which can only be a positive for the future. Pourie is a goal machine, as is Amoo and Eccelstone. I remember them chasing up that GArry Mckay Stevens last year, and how our youth scouts really though highly of him.

Even better is that thanks to LFC TV, those of us no longer local can actually see them play. There are some really good contenders for the future in the kids - Dave Amoo, Marvin Purie and Nathan Eccleston just being three - Hansen looks like he'll be a good keeper, Astrid is the midfield oontroller - just bags of talent there - and to finish off, the Ressies are top of their league with a game in hand having demolished Boro!

Proof if any were needed that Stevie Heighway, great and faithful servant that he was - had his pririties a bit a*rse about face. These kids and ressies will not only be good teams in themselves while learning the Liverpool system according to Rafa, but in time provide a greater probability of more and better players coming through to the senior squad than we've seen in years.

Probably Arsenal in the next round id imagine their youth team is pretty tasty too. I wonder if those players with the reserves that qualify will figure at all like Bruna, Pancheco?

The reserve team seems to be made up more of overseas players while the under 18 team seems to be have more British players at the moment.

I went to this. Wycombe were unbelievable, literally kiched the sh*t out of our lads. The crowd was small less than 1000 and you could hear what was going on, Wycombe obviously prepare their kids for the alehouse game of division two, huge physical team for their age and very very physical.

I must say our lot looked nowhere near as good a last year although the centre backs stood out and were very good.

That's pretty much the opposite of the rest of the season though, we're pretty shaky at the back this season but we're scoring for fun, there's a lot more talent in this team than in the two previous teams who went on to win it, they're pretty bad at the back though whereas the last two years we've been excellent there.

I may be being a bit a bit harsh here in retrospect, the conditions were terrible and the finishing was excellent, in particular the third goal is a screamer, I was about 5 yards away from the net when it went in.

Was that Ecclestone's one? The one where he cut inside and blasted it? Yeah, he looks a quality player. I'd say 8 or 9 of that team have a chance of making it, whether with us or another team.

I really hope Amoo makes it to the first team. If ever a name was destined for the back of a shirt...

I can already see everybody in the loft dusting down their KLF album. :)
