Didier Drogba requires surgery on a knee problem which could keep him out for several weeks although the club have yet to decide when the operation will go ahead. The Ivory Coast striker had a scan yesterday, which showed that the injury to his left knee, first picked up while on international duty last month, has not healed. Chelsea's medical team will now examine the scan and talk to the player before making a decision on what action to take.

Chelsea can ill afford to lose their main striker for the busy Christmas and New Year programme and would prefer to delay any intervention until January, when their top scorer is due to depart for the African Cup of Nations. However, Drogba is keen to play for his country and will be reluctant to jeopardise that by playing on now.

Drogba is the club's top scorer with nine goals in all competitions this season but the club's other forwards have struggled to find the net. Salomon Kalou has three league goals and Andriy Shevchenko and Claudio Pizarro one apiece.

He'll probably end up getting the operation in January, thus missing the ACN.

Think he'll have it in the next week or two and will then have a row about them not releasing him for the ACN, him saying he's fit, them saying he's not, make no mistake he wants to play in the ACN

Excellent news !

Once he is missing for 4 or 5 games that will do me - the means of which I am not too concerned about but if he happened to have his surgery now and come back fit and strong and go to the ACN and have a stormer and lead the Ivory Coast along with Kolo Toure to the final then that would be absolutely spiffing Jeeves !

Could well be the deal breaker alright. Its seems that retaining the African Player of the Year is pretty important to him.

he's a national icon in ivory coast. no way he'll put an operation before playing for his country in the ACN.

Chelsea will probably sign a striker on Jan 1st IMO.

I see Abramovitch stumping up to help his personal choice manager.

Hate to see them get David Villa.
