Ir's the simmer anger and the massive confidence that is just exceptional.

Can you imagine what his reaction would have been to Bellamy or Cisse?

Having said that, he'd love Carra and Stevie. I can imagine Shanks now:

"Jamie Carragher. Hearrrrrt of a lion, hearrrrt of a lion"

So much to learn about football there, so much to learn about life

Particular phrases (about the players) " We play for you, we play for you, who pay our wages"

"Since I've been here I'm drummed into the players, it's you who matter. If they didn't know that then, they do now"

"If you can't make decisions in this game. If you can't make decsions in life, you're a bloody menace"

And my particular favourite "I wanted to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility.. eventually everyone would have to give up, give in"

I know this phrase is often used, seldom ever truly deserved but he was a man of the people, a true legend. I was lucky to be around when he was in full flow. I make no apology for calling him a messiah!!! He was unique, a one off!!!

For you younger guys, I'd really recommend that you follow Charlie's advice and watch those clips, particularly the last one. Us older guys may kick the bucket before you but we were fortunate to have witnessed this man.

It's not just about the football either. Make note of the passion he exhibits. You'll just never see that again. LFC was EVERYTHING to him. He just couldn't help himself. Bob won more than Shanks, but make no mistake about it, Shanks made us different. He made us special.

No other team had a Shanks. His peers were Busby, Nicholson, Stein, Revie, Mee. All distinct second raters in comparison.

I saw Shanks in his prime too, and consider myself blessed. He is a god to me.

Good job, though, that Sky, der interweb, FM etc. were not around in those days, eh? Plenty of chumps would have wanted him out in the fallow years - for sure ;)

Shanks would have had the media in his pocket. One thing is for sure, they would not have gotten the better of him, he was way too smart for them. There are few men he become born leaders and Shanks wasone of them. I remember one season as a kid in the Kop being in complete awe of him as he walked around the pitch with his arms oustretched drinking in ther adulation.

I can hear it now. 7 years between trophies - not good enough! We are Liverpool.

utter utter nonsense.

Not what I said was it?

In any case, neither of the two you edited out were in his league. He was responsible for not only making a great club, but creating a great club culture. He made Liverpool what it is today.

Busby and Stein inherited theirs. That's not to knock them, but they weren't as good as Shanks. They were better than the others I named though.

Hold on a wee second, credit where credit is due, Busby had a team ready to rule Europe in '58, half of it and the dream for them died in Munich. But he managed to galvanise another young team to win it 10 years later. And I don't understand the point about him inheriting a team? Utd were banjaxed after the war and going nowhere and Busby helped build their reputation and prowess, just like Shankly did with us during the 60's.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Utd, but I have a massive respect for their history and for Matt Busby, and if it wasn't for Utd, we would only have the toffees to hate!

And as for Jock Stein, what did he inherit? Celtic are the only team to have ever won the European Cup with all the team's players coming from within 12 miles of the city of the club that won it.

And the fact that when they won the cup, Bill Shankly approached his good friend Jock Stein and said..."Well, John, now you're immortal!"

In other words, you are full of s***! and I don't care if I get banned cos of my opinions on this, but my da was a massive Utd and Celtic fan and I know that if we didn't have the scum to hate; especially over the last 17 years; then what has been the point, apart from realising that we have massively underachieved, especially when someone decided to give Souness the job!

sat here with tears in my eyes throughout that last one - how we, and football, miss him. What a man.

I copy you Charlie. Fantastic stuff.

Does anyone know where I can find the entire YNWA anthem which was played in the beginning of the last video. That was the most touching version I have ever heard. I cried !

Well you shouldn't get banned for that mate. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

You're right to draw the similarilty between Busby and Shanks. Busby did help make ManU what they are now and put them front and centre in the world. Nobody is questioning his CV even with the downturn at the end.

It's a bit different for Stein. Again, no knocking what he did for them. But, they were a dynasty before Stein was born. He did great with the team in 67, a unique feat that will never be replicated.

But Shanks was different. Very different. He took a bunch of no-hopers, a very average team, and dragged them up to become a dynasty. He set the pattern for the greatest club in the history of British football.

But there is more than what he did on the field. It's what he did for the psyche of the club and the fans. It's him who made us what we are. He is the individual who made us revered all over the world. Never has one man made such a massive imprint on a single club. Never.

And that's why he is the best there ever was.

liverpool had won the league 5 times before shankly joined, Utd had won it twice before Busby joined....shankly won the league 3 times in his tenure...busby 5 and the european cup.

I know its hard to admit otherwise for you but what Busby did for UTD is equal (obviously id argue it was more cause of what potential he had built was robbed from him just as the major successes was really gonna kick in) to what shankly did for Liverpool (and when it comes to trophies and titles the best thing he did for liverpool was retire)
