Guest Snorky Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Why is we persist with this zonal marking, we know it doesn't work and the stats prove it. For 2 seasons Pepe has kept the most clean sheets in the Premiership - PROOF it doesn't work. This season we have only conceeded from penalties - PROOF it doesn't work. It will rear it's ugly head soon you mark my words, it's like the word ROTATION, it's only brought up when it doesn't work
Rimbeux Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 One is proven, one aint? Rotation isn't the issue full stop, it's the how and why and when and who
Guest spk Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 look its clear we need to be looking for another manager at this point, in fact id be shocked if the board didnt already have someone ear marked. apart from the level of success rafa has achieved in cup competitions its clear we're further away from winning the league than ever. ok so he's reviewed the squad and got rid of a lot of dead would but who's he brought in - alonso, agger, mach, arbeloa, torres - these arent the world class players liverpool fc should be attracting. and then he's littered the squad with others than cant even get into their national sides as theyre not even fit to lace the boots of some of the nations aging pro's like beckham and owen. rafas now four years into his five year plan and he hasnt won the league yet, its time to clear out the dead wood - FACT. the board need to make a decision ASAP and bring in fresh blood otherwise we're in danger of having to go yet another season with meaningless cup glory, and i for one am sick of it

Zoob Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Our zonal parking during the penalties has been terrible. Nobody was marking the area where the penalty takers have been.
Guest hankthejeweller Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I really hope Rafa doesn't have a 5 yr plan Remember the last guy we had with one of those... the one who won us loads of trophies, what about him?
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 the one who won us loads of trophies, what about him? Yeah that one, who also never won us the league after his 5 yr plan.
dorgie Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I love a bit of zonal rotation of a Sunday night
Hassony Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Yeah that one, who also never won us the league after his 5 yr plan. we would have won it if it wasn't for his heart attack
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 we would have won it if it wasn't for his heart attack Is that a fact?

Next we move on to the age-old question...Martin Samuels - 350lbs of prime football writer, or 100lbs of hackneyed scribe and 250lbs of compacted faecal matter?
adayinthelife Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 This zonal marking may work when defending but the players are lacking when it comes to attacking the ball... I still don't understand why Benitez brings every player back when defending set pieces, unless he is just too negative which is simply not the Liverpool way. We have one of the biggest teams in Europe, yet we defend as though nobody is trusted.

I still don't understand why Benitez brings every player back when defending set pieces, unless he is just too negative which is simply not the Liverpool way. We have one of the biggest teams in Europe, yet we defend as though nobody is trusted. its about playing the percentages. How likely to score is the striker you leave upfield compared to how likely the extra defender will prevent the opposition scoring? the number of times an isolated striker scores from a corner clearance is tiny. then there is the argument that having a player on the halfway line forces the opponents to keep two players back which is a bit of a false argument as most teams keep two players back anyway. have a look next time we conceed a corner. You'll invariably see one defender on the halfway line, and one stood 5-10 yards inside our half.
adayinthelife Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 I thought that would be right up your alley, though? The manager should trust his players, but I get the impression Benitez is worse than me when it comes to trusting people, and Pako(one of the few he did trust) jumping ship can't have helped either.

I agree it's a case of Benitez opting for safety first and the chances of scoring is small, but if we kept two men in their half then the opposition would keep at least 3 or even 4 players back. Just a simple case of taking the initiative, which Benitez seems less prepared to do than when he was manager at Valencia. The other problem with bringing everybody back is that when the ball gets cleared it inevitably comes straight back. It's not like we have a plan to counter attack with pace and numbers if the ball drops to one of our players, which is a missed opportunity as we have enough pace to do it. Sack Rafa Howard Wilkinson for manager!!!
