Rules Query - Encroachment on Penalties?

...strange goings on in my footy game at the weekend, and a significant rule change which I haven't heard of if our referee was right.

 

We were 1-0 down with about 15 minutes left and were awarded a penalty. Our lad steps up, slots it in the bottom corner but one of our players had encroached into the area so we get ready for the re-take.

 

To our surprise and horror, the ref (a Lancashire League referee - from a good standard and who had had an excellent game up to then) awards a free-kick to the defending team on the edge of the box and we don't get to re-take the penalty.

 

Everyone including me went mad - I've never heard of the rules being changed on this, and thought it was still re-taken. The referee was adamant that this is a new rule brought in two years ago, which strikes me as strange because no-one I know is aware of it and I've not seen anything about it at all.

 

So does anyone know if this is correct? If so do Premier League players etc know about it, because it could cause murder if not. Imagine a team losing their penalty completely for a player straying into the area during a high profile Prremier League match when the players and managers were unaware of the change.

 

If this is right it really means the attacking players need to stay well clear of the box if true because it seems extremely harsh to lose your penalty for putting a foot in.

 

If it's wrong and the ref has just had a moment where he's lost the plot we'll be appealing to ge the game re-played, so if anyone knows for sure on this your input would be greatly appreciated...

Well you're all right folks - ref had a mad moment and he has called our manager to apologise. We're appealing the result and the ref has said he'll back us up so fair enough.

 

Weird mistake to make though, this guy really was a very competant referee who had got pretty much everything right up until then. Like you say Macca, it's as though he's had one of those dreams with the rules being changed!
