I think that the management team has made one hell of a statement here and I salute them. It is not just the larger of the newer players that has attracted by attention but the number of players brought in for the future of the club. These guys are not just second string players that will keep us going in the reserve league, these are first rate players being brought in and groomed for the furture of our club. By bringing them in now they are being given that most important time to adapt to the English style of football that many are not given. How many times have we see a player start in the league and the words "Oh well its his first season! They always take a season to settle"

There are some fantastic prospects arriving now. These players are being given the chance because we have had the funds to buy others that will make the difference now! Players like Yessi, who has already adapted to the league.

Well done guys

Well said, Dave - this 'whole club' approach is something which should be a bit special as it all unfolds in the coming seasons - a real grounding for a fully competitive future.

Also by bringing these kids in young , they will get 2 years in our Academy system which if I remember rightly means they count as 'home based' players under the new UEFA rulings

Hmmm, good point. Would certainly explain the hoovering-up of decent youngsters we're joining in with, that Arsenal and Chelsea have been at for a while now.

I still prefer to be "emo" about the whole Liverpool Transfer situation..

Babel is s***

Benayoun is a waste of Space

Torres will need at least 5 seasons to settle in

And we will lose on the opening day....

Another factor is the rules regarding 'home grown' players in UEFA competition. When are we likely to see another bunch of local kids come through the academy and nail down first team places? The likes of Fowler, Owen, McManaman, Gerrard and Carragher are very thin on the ground. From 2008, the squad for all UEFA competitions must include 8 players that went through a domestic league academy. Four of which have to have been with the club for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21. That's where the recruitment of the likes of Dani Pacheco will really pay off if he fulfills his potential.

Only concern with all these young players is how the hell they all get enough playing time. We have about 50 'youngster' at the moment, a few have gone on loan but we're still buying at a rate of knots and with only 18 games in the reserve league and a similar number in the U18's it's going to be a push to give those that stay significant playing time.

Apparently we've re-entered the Lancashire cup(?) and the Seniors Cup this year but they are by no means guarenteed games.

Point taken. I understand and agree with what you are saying but if there are no prospects coming through then what else do we do? The culture over the past 5 years with the youth today has centred around pcs and game stations and not the football and sports that we did ourselves. There are some but not the numbers we saw 10 years or so. I run an U14 football team and struggle to get 12 lads wanting to join even though last season we won the league with just 12 players.

This is undeniably true. My Mrs is a teacher and constantlyb tells me about the trouble her school has in getting teams together for ANY sport - and this is a school with a top sporting pedigree.

Like Dave, I've started coaching a kids team recently and have exactly the same problem - that, and the state some of the little butterballs who do turn up (often shoved there by parents trying to get them off their ars*s) are in means I'm lucky to get them through basic training, never mind a whole game.
