Formation for next season

Everyone is discussing who is coming who is going but that is a lot of speculation, I'm wondering will Rafa finally be able to implement the system that made Valencia one of the finest teams in Europe, the 4-2-3-1 system. I think one of our finest displays this year was against Arsenal (a lackluster Arsenal but still). I wonder finally if Rafa will have the right players to accomodate his favoured formation, I think the signing of Dani Alves maybe crucial as great as Finnan is he is getting on and we do need a more attacking emphasis from our fullbacks, the sight of Alves marauding down the right side would be amazing

I'd only be happy with 4-5-1 if we got two class, goalscoring wingers, and a lethal finisher. Otherwise it's a terrible formation to have as first choice.

Touché (no idea if that was an appropriate word to use there, maybe someone could fill me in?!) - Thats the mission that Rafa has got this summer - I'd be more than happy with Simao, Alves, Eto'o and Tevez, but I'm just a very greedy boy (I'm not fat tho)

4-5-1 is 4-2-3-1

4-2-3-1 seems to be the formation Benitez wants to be able to play. A formation like that can go from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 in the same game = tactical advantage.

 

I think the reason Rafa wants (wanted?) Alves was for him to play in the position Finnan plays today. Against better teams he could play on the wing to make our team more solid on the right flank. And that is also the reason I think Rafa wanted to play Gerrard out on the right. With the amount of running Alves does in each game it wouldn't be such a huge problem if Gerrards drifts from the position.

 

Lets imagine that we don't buy a trillion players that go into the first XI for next season. Lets say we buy one top class striker (Torres?), one winger who can play on both wings (Simao?) and Alves. If those are the buys this season that go straight into the first team we'll be able to line up like this:

The 3 behind the strikers can all switch positions with each other. We'd be pretty well covered for all of them if anyone is injured (Pennant, Leto, Riise, Alves, Garcia). Few additions also mean less time to gel together as a team.

 

For the two behind them we'd have Sissoko and Lucas (as well as Gerrard) as possible backups.

 

Add to that Voronin (can possibly play in all 4 positions in attack) and one good back up central defender and I'd say we are looking pretty strong.

Its the formation of choice for both English and Spanish prem league champions for the last few years. Chelsea play it, and do the Mancs most of the time, as do Barca...

...a bit Barcelonaesque with only 3 additions needed. Personally I'd also like to see another top quality forward signed as well for 2 up top dependant on tactics.

I think Aurelio will be more prominent next year if he stays clear of injury, hs can give us some serious quality from the left and compliment Alves very well

I seen no reason why Finnan should be replaced at Right Back in these formations. Alves maybe more direct in going forward, but a defenders first job is to defend and Finnans consistency is vital to our stability at the back.

With Kuyt coming back to the midfield we've basically played between a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 this season.

 

Since his first season Rafa has rarely ventured into playing with an extra 'midfielder' and other than the odd occasion I see no reason why this should change.
