The nipper's playgroup is fantastic, even if it does cost a bomb, she's really developed since Sept when she started. (Pre-K to anyone septic-side).

BUT

They have a fund-raiser tonight at Cipriani. A good restaurant, but no feckin restaurant makes pasta worth $30 a plate. Tickets for tonight are $150 each. Plus babysitter, that's a min of $400 for the night. Then there's the raffle. $30/ticket. Bargain - you get 2 books of 5 & a discount if you buy all - another $200.

Then there's a silent auction. We got a 26-page book of items in that auction, examples being:

One person has donated 4 Magnums of Ch. Mouton Rothschild 2001-2004. Worth about $500 each - probably $700 for the 2003

another - 5 leather women's bags - Chanel, Burberry, Ferre... worth about $7,000

another - a week in a 4 double bedroom ski-house in Breckenridge - $8,000

there are weeks n the Hamptons, cases of wine, art etc

I'm making a stand & not attending.

The wife went to some kiddy-theatre a few weeks ago with the bairn & a friend & their bairn. Her friend had a couple of her friends go along (all 4 kids in the same school). The parents were harping on about getting private-tuition for their kids, so they could put them through entrance-tests for schools starting in Sept 08. The f***ing kids are 3!! They should be enjoying their lives, not being tutored & forced into entrance-exams. These parents believe there's a domino effect - if they don't get a good first school at 5, there'll be a knock-on when they're 11 & all the way up to University & maybe they won't go to Harvard or Yale as a direct result of their school at 5.

They hate us too, because we've got English accents & perceive us to be 'favoured' in the schooling system.

I've ust about had it
