Ive just been looking at a few you tube moments from the semi final games against Chelsea and both are great moments, but which was actually the best atmosphere from the 2 games? 2005 or 2007?

I felt 2005 was better. 2007 was excellent, but it felt orchestrated and as if it was expected. 2005 was spontaneous.

Yeah 2005 for me too, more surprise outta anything. On Tuesday I felt people were just expectin the atmosphere to appear!

2005.

2005 was just a glorious run. 2007 hasn't felt as special, to me. For example, the PSV home game was pretty much a done deal after the 3-0 win away. As others have said, 2005 was relatively unexpected, and we really had some awesome games in the build-up to the Chelsea match (e.g. Olympiakos).

For whatever reason, I don't feel as excited about Athens as I did about Istanbul.

I hated Chelsea more back then, they seemed invincible so beating them seemed impossible and when it happened it was like defeating Darth Vader.

There was also the fact that were a worse team back then and nobody expected us to do anything. We've improved substantially in the last two years, we now expect success.

'kinell, even if you think it - dont say it.

you sound almost blasé.

you might think it special in retrospect if it takes another 21 years to get to a final.

Sorry, I know what you mean. 2005 was euphoric, though. So long since we'd last got to a Big Ears final, beating Chelsea in such tense fashion, getting there against the odds, the whole lot. Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic about Athens. I sang and shouted so much on Tuesday that I could hardly speak by the end of it. Certainly not blasé. Getting to the final in 2007 is special, but getting there in 2005 was a different kind of special for me. I guess I've just said it again. Sorry.

I wasn't at either game so I can't talk about the atmosphere. However, whether we have been expecting to do well or not after Istanbul, I gotta say that it feels great to be in the final again. Many out there labelled it a fluke that we even got to the final in 05... remember "lucky"?

Well, I don't hear anyone talking about that anymore... also I doubt we'll be hearing about "whether it actually crossed the line..." anymore either ;)

so lads, win or lose the final, we're a great european side and there is no sane argument that can cast a shred of doubt on that.

That for me is the general difference between now and then.

good post, 2005 was special because it was done against the odds, but this time its even more special because everyone can see what a great European side we are, we will be among the favorites to win it next year again (and for as long as Rafa is still the liverpool manager).

I think both are wonderful for different reasons. I mean, 2005 was completely and utterly magical but this year has also been special in the sense that we had to knock out the holders and defeat a Chelsea side baying for blood after twice losing to us in recent cup semi-finals.

If we win it again, it won't register very far behind '05 on the Richter scale - Indeed, it will make inarguable to even the most biased opposition fan that we are a European superpower once more and confirm our status alongside Real Madrid as the best side in European competition since the turn of the millennium.

2005 was a new experience for my generation.

We'd never been to a European Cup final, so that Chelsea game to get us there was the most nerve-wracking experience of my life.

2005 was miles better, however I actually think 2007 was possibly louder in actual volume as I think there were more songs sung, but not a better atmosphere as in 2005 it was just a roar and a cheer for every tackle, block, pass and shot.

Nothing will ever beat the 2005 Semi-final for me... the first and the best!! The same as my Dad always said about Rome...

AC Milan I think you'll find...

Actually Real have won more Cups (2?) but have done t*** all since May 2001 in the European cup, whereas this will be AC's 3rd final in 5 years.

Sure Real are nothing in recent years however they have 8 european wins where-as Milan have 6. So it would be rather odd for a liverpool supporter to not see Real as the goal ;)

Thing is, if we can manage to beat Milan this time then we'll be level on European cup wins at 6 each. we might not be climbing up the premiership table however the european one is looking good, 2nd place ;)

It was actually louder during the penalties than at any point in 2005. People forget that for a lot of that game, much like last week, most people were cacking it every time Chelsea got near (which wasn't often last Tuesday). It was just because of the six minutes and the Gudjohnsen miss that everyone went mental two years ago.

Just watching the dvd of last week, the thing that just hit me about 2007 was the number of scarfs, can't remember 2005 having that many.

2005 for me, simply because we had no right to win that competition with the team we were fielding. There was magic in the air and there'll never be another final like that...3 goal come back, best save ever made by a goalkeeper, penalties, getting to keep the trophy and bring it home for good...just doesn't happen outside of dreams!

this game against chelsea has to rank as the bigger achievement though given the first leg

Winning an egg and spoon race let alone the European Cup with Djimi Traore in your team is the greatest achievement in the world ever - FACT!!

I haven't quite got the same feeling for this one either - compared to '05.

'05 was fairy-tale, a team performing beyond all expectations. This run seems more businesslike - still getting the right result, but with a few less golden moments.

The second leg against PSV was a bit, "OK, next?", which was a strange feeling to have considering we were at such a late stage in the comp' and having to face Chelsea AGAIN was just draining...

True, but he said 'turn of the millenium'.

I do agree 2005 was better because of the 'magic' - it seemed that whatever the opposition did, whatever UEFA threw at us, we threw it straight back at them - with Traore, Nunez, Biscan etc in the team.

This time around we're a lot more professional and measured in our approach.

Real Madrid have won it nine times, not eight.

I didn't enjoy the 2007 win as much as 2005 for the reasons some others have stated (although I'm old enough to have been to six Finals) but what stopped my complete enjoyment was the thought of meeting that horrible shower in Athens and being unable to get excited about that prospect. After Milan gave them what for though I cheered up.

The 2005 semi was a new experience for many fans and was all the better for that. Talking up the atmosphere this year meant it wasn't as spontaneous.
