Guest kapers Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=168584.0 From poster fcbruno on rawk Journo being interviewed about the champions league draw: Stafford was just on the Simon Mayo show discussing the Champions League draw when the following happened. I'm paraphrasing here.... Mayo: If Liverpool end up playing Man U in the final, they may as well move it to somewhere like Villa Park? Stafford: No, Hillsborough (laughs to himself) Rest of Panel: Total silence (long pause) Mayo: Errr, moving on..." From poster Brigada Internacional on rawk You can listen to it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/fi...velive/mayo_fri The guests are named around 5 minutes in. Ian Stafford is from the Mail on Sunday. The Hillsborough comment is on 8 minutes 48 seconds in. Don't know if this has been mentioned on here

Guest kapers Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I'm absolutely disgusted that this guy thought to use Hillsborough as a joke.
Huyton_Red Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 It never ceases to amaze me what the f'ck goes on in these peoples heads What on earth was this man thinking ffs
Spoone Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 that was one of the most awful 'silences' i've heard on radio, and rightly so.
Stevie H Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 was anyone here listening to this? or can it be listened to again? context is important here.

Morris Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 (edited) Listening to it at the time i dont think he meant it as a joke. One of the other pundits mentioned Villa Park as an alternative neutral venue to Athens for a Liverpool v Man U champions league final. I think he mentioned Hillsborough in the same breath as Villa park as for many years they were the traditional neutral venues for the FA cup semis not as a joke, he just didnt think what he was saying when he said Hillsborough and Liverpool. If they had been talking about a Chav v Manc final i think the same comments ref Villa Park and Hillsborough would still have been made. Just a thick c***, not an evil c***. So you actually think that he was seriously suggesting that Hillsborough was a suitable venue for a Champions League Final involving Liverpool? The word Hillsborough no longer refers to a stadium/place in the minds of most people - it refers to an event, the disaster. That is true whatever people's opinions about the causes may be, and I can probably guess what this pricks are.

R A Softlad Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 (edited) Well they have at least 1 complaint... I can't understand anyone defending it. There's some sucking through teeth, awkward silence and what sounds like some pointed looks as he stops laughing. Guy writes for The Mail, enough said. Edited March 9, 2007 by R A Softlad

There's some sucking through teeth, awkward silence and what sounds like some pointed looks as he stops laughing. Guy writes for The Mail, enough said. yep, done my complaint by beeb website and mayo email. had done the mayo email first but only as i had the details to hand - got a bounceback which has the beeb details which I'd in the meantime got from RAWK but are below if anyone else wishes to complain: "If you've a complaint or question to which you require an answer, please go to the Five Live website at www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive and click on Contact Us on the left-hand side. This will direct your enquiry to the right place and ensure it's dealt with properly." remember the backlash to the tsunami joke - was it rod marsh who was sacked? joking about tragedies is simply indefensible.

That is true whatever people's opinions about the causes may be, and I can probably guess what this pricks are. I haven't listened to it but the thought of Villa Park hosting a Europeean Cup final would make me laugh, so I assume the original poster is saying he may have mentioned Hillsborough and laughed at the thought of a European Cup Final at that stadium also given that it used to host semis like Villa park. I do also agree though that Hillsborough is a place name now associated with a disaster more then anything else, like Lockerbie or Hungerford. I would be surprised if a footie journalist made this mistake. If he was been a heartless t*** (which I think he was) then I hope he gets his just deserts. Edited March 9, 2007 by JohnnyH
Guest John Mal Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 He knew what he was saying alright. Despicable c***.
Big E Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Anyone with any semblance of knowledge about the game would not make a mistake like that - especially in light of the increased recent attention. Of all potential grounds - even semi grounds - why bring the name of Hillsborough up in any refrence to Liverpool. Is he mates with Mackenzie at all? t***.
Zoob Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 complete and utter tool. I don't know if it was just said in bad taste, or if he was trying to be controversial, or if he genuinely thought it would somehow be a funny 'joke'. What ever way, the silence that followed it let him know how his idiocy was received.
berdoing Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Lad I work with reckons liverpool fans should just "get over it". no prizes for guessing who he supports
