one line....one measly f***ing line from Woolnough

they discussed Mourinho, Neville, Beckham, Curbishley at length

we get one line

if Chelsea had won in the Camp Nou we would not be hearing the last of it

i know i should know better but you would think that we would get a decent mention

You would I agree. Its always a Mourinho/Ferguson lovefest on that show though. I don't usually go in for the media bias thing but that is particularly bad.

On a related issue, it was nice to see Thommo stick it to Merson yesteday.

Missed that - what did they say?

He just said something like 'and some people on this panel actually laughed when the thought of Liverpool beating Barcelona was raised'. They then showed Merson's infuriating f***ing chuckle as Redknapp said we could do Barca and then went back to him looking a prize c***.

Look at it this way. They are from an era where only those in the ground saw the match. MotD would have 20mins on one match and the goals from the rest. The vast majority would rely on the hacks to give them a match report.

It's not needed anymore, With the top clubs, more matches than not are on TV, those that aren't you get full commentary online, a lot of people watch either illegal satellite or internet coverage (which in the near future you'll be able to buy legally) and Sky have 45 mins of highlights for those that can't, so really you can make your own mind up.

To add to that you have forums like this, and blogs where people get their info. Anyone can write an article that will reach millions, and there are tens of millions of fans out there whose expertise in football far outstrips the 'professional' expert. It's not like politics where expert input is valuable, or finance where those writing on it are as qualified as those practising, 99% of football writers are no better positioned than your average fan in the stand or pub, with all the bias and favouritism that comes with being a fan.

Not long ago you'd be waiting for the papers to see what people thought of a great result, now you rush to the forums, no-one trusts the hacks anymore, so they get more and more self-important and pretend to have more and more inside knowledge. but they can only keep that pretence up for so long. They are a dying breed. They are not needed anymore. I can see room for one or two local journalists per club, the club mouth piece to leak info to fans that they don't want to post officially, try out the water etc.

But the rest? They'll be extinct or as good as in 5-10 years.

That show and Soccer AM - never bothered with either, ever.

Somehow I don't feel the worse for it.

Filler for the 24-hour sports channels, should be treated with the same respect that filler for other channels is, like the jade goody shows etc, cheap to make fodder.

The problem is, we are from a generation where football on TV was one match a week (which didn't usually start broadcasting 'til October) some seasons Motd, and then Saint and Greavsie. We lapped up ever extra crumb, some people still do. They need to take a step back and assess the informational / entertainment value of what they are actually watching and ask themselves why. It is mainly zero on both counts.

You get this a lot on BBC Radio Five Live, too. Being based in London, it is obviously easier to get "Metrocentral" Chelsea-loving journalists into the studio to talk about footie. These guys are total @rseh0les. When we had got into the last 16 of the CL in the season we won it, they were having a discussion about the prospects for the English clubs. A lot of chat about Arsenal and Chelsea. "What about Liverpool" asked the presenter. "Oh they are only in the last 16 to make up the numbers" said the little s***. That was when I knew it was time to put a big bet on the lads. :)

Great post but I have to disagree with the conclusion. The major newspapers will always want football on the back pages and there will always therefore be sports journalists. The proliferation of sports news and opinions online won't ever kill that in my opinion.

No and indeed, the great "democratic" invasion of sports coverage by phone-ins, forums and blogs is actually adding to much sports and specifically football journalism going downhill.

Fanf***ingtastic. " I take it back " . You can't, Merson, you 24 carat tw*t.

Never liked him. During his playing career he was always having a pop at us and then he sits there laughing at us and Rafa beating Barca ?

Made my Sunday, that has.

I really hope you're right. They most certainly are NOT needed anymore. Vermin they are.

Part of the joy of winning is the pleasure of pissing off your enemies at the same time. Let's face it, the annoyance of Merson's original snide expression has been more than compensated for by him being made to look foolish afterwards.

Likewise for these hacks, the more they disregard us, the more satisfying it is to do well and show them up.

The Barca result pleased all us Reds, but upset even more of those who hate us. It's just as much fun to go on Bluekipper after a result like that as it is to visit YNWA or RAWK.

Not the first time Merson has apologised. He's got previous

Aplologise about Cocaine

Aplologise about drink

Aplologise about gambling

Why he apologised for these, is a mystery
