The fella in your picture ought to be in there. And Stevie's not number 2, not yet...

i'd put him at number two now, no question. he is that good.

oul arses who sit around me reckon Billy Liddell was better than Kenny, but i never seen Liddell play. of teh players i have seen, its King Kenny, Gerrard, Souness 1, 2 and 3

Not the best players, but the best players I've seen.....

1. King Kenny

2. Rushie

3. Keegan

4. Barnes

5. Gerrard

I would prob have Digger above Rushie (tough call), both great, but had differnt qualities. Clem was also immense,so I would put him in instead of Keegan. And Souness as well soudl fit in....too many options and all great in their own right!

Discusssss...

Emlyn Hughes and Tommy Smith would have to be in there and Peter Thompson was a better left-winger than Barnes

Why the past tense

Earlier this year

??A kid asked me on Wednesday if I would have liked to play for another team. Straight away I said Liverpool.?

?First of all, I would have loved to play with Steven Gerrard and second I like the club and their fans. There?s something about Anfield that you can?t explain.?

?I love it when you step out of the dressing-room and you see the Kop, the scarves, and [hear people] singing You?ll Never Walk Alone. Just that, that would do it for me.

?Obviously it can never happen because I love Arsenal too much. There can never be a possibility of playing anywhere else in England.?

Now he's fallen out with Wenger the last paragraph doesn't apply

I'd find it hard to find a place for any current Liverpool play above the likes of Dalglish, Rush, Souness, Hansen and Barnes right now! Maybe in 6 or 7 years time, when we can look back at the bulk of their career it will be possible.

Those 5 right there are the greatest Liverpool playes I've seen playing enough time to judge. Of course there where many greats before then as worthy as well!

I agree Gerrard is not even close to those 5.

Gerrard won us the CL and FA Cup. His performances merit his place in the top 5 now IMO. We always talk, "may be he will earn it in a few years time", I think he has now more than done that. Yes the PL is missing, but it will come. He holds his own with all of our great players, he can do it all and he has won us major silverware. I think the only question is will he be rated higher than the King when he finshed his great career.

I hope you are purposley saying that to wind me up  I can't stand hearing that line, it belongs only with the gutter press. It's rubbish.

One day he may be up there, but no way is he above them five I listed, imo of course. And there could be older players I didnt get to see much up there I guess, but I'll leave that to the oldies to argue over!

That's the best five I've seen. Gerrard should break into the group but he has a few more years of achievement to go before he can be properly assessed.

I would also agree with the Liddell recommendation, based on what I've heard (not seen). Apparently he was our best ever player, but obviously during a time before mass media coverage.

I know, I know ;)

The point I am making is in the last 6 years his overall contribution to the success of a squad that, quite frankly, is poor compared to the one Kenny et al played in has been immense. His contribution with key goals etc has help get us there. I know the media hype ****es people off, but I really think he is now one of our best ever players. Imagine what he could of achieved if we put him in the 70s or 80s teams. Maybe I am jumping the gun, but sometimes I think we maybe don't give him enough praise, maybe because of the media **** that follows him, maybe because of the Chelsea **** or maybe because we are a little rose-tinted over our own glorious past.

Just my opinon like and probably most will disagree.

These polls are very difficult because it is easy to forget the players that turned Livcerpool from a Second Division team into a European force. We didn't get to see the likes of Rowdy, Sir Roger, St John, Chris Lawler et al every week on TV. Yet these men who all came from lower clubs and virtually all from humble beginnings were all superb players. How can we compare the likes of Peter Thompson and Smithy with today's players. How can we compare a player that played most of a Cup Final with a broken collarbone with anyone else. Even though I didn't see much of them they truly were Giants and I was very upset not to see more of them higher up in the recent .tv polls. For those too young ask anyone who went to the games in the 60's how good the likes of Hunt, Byrne, St John and the Big Man Yeats really were. By the 70's a nd 80's we were alraedy a well oiled machine that just needed the odd tweaking, but in the 60's we were run down and needed a complete overhaul.
