USA Reds RE: Fox Soccer's Cohen

I have taken the liberty to post an article from another LFC Forum regarding Steve Cohen who is a co host of the Fone In show. I believe a strong response is needed. Please read the following article:

Presenter `apologises' but is it enough?

This Is Anfield - December 13th, 2006

Last week we reported how a soccer presenter on America's Fox

Football Fone-In had made offensive and incorrect comments regarding

the Hillsborough disaster which took place in 1989.

For those who do not know, 96 Liverpool supporters were killed

attempting to watch their side in an FA Cup semi final against

Nottingham Forest at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium. Several

enquiries into the death's concluded that the main cause of the

tragedy was inadequate policing and wrong decisions made by

authorities. Several thousand fans were allowed into just one `pen'

(section of the stand) but failure to open other pens to alleviate

the crush resulted in supporters being crushed and suffocated

against the railings, fences and each other.

Some fans even went back into the pen to attempt to rescue their

friends or loved ones. Some did not make it. It is a tragedy which

resulted in the Lord Justice Taylor recommended stadiums becoming

all seater, and the removal of fences from all stadiums. [More about

the disaster can be located in detail here]

On last Tuesday's Fox Football Fone-In show, presenter and Chelsea

fan Steven Cohen, referred to the disaster and stating how Liverpool

fans had "directly caused" it and also stated "there's a disgusting

side of Liverpool's history that I'll be happy to talk about."

His comments follow on from him reportedly `joking' Liverpool should

have 39 coffins on their badge to go with the 5 stars, relating to a

seperate disaster at Heysel in 1985 when Liverpool and Juventus fans

fought during a European Cup Final in Belgium. On that occasion 39

Italian fans died and while Liverpool fans admittedly were involved,

that again was due to other factors involving the state of the

stadium. That though, is not the point here and it is Cohen's ill-

infomed comments which he is openly educating American soccer fans

with on national television.

After several hundred Reds fans emailed and complained to the show

and it's producers Cohen made an apology at the beginning of this

Tuesday's show;

"Last week here on Fox Football Fone-in, in the heat of the moment,

I made some very disparaging remarks about Liverpool Football Club

and their supporters. I know that i'm a passionate Chelsea fan ?. I

also know that when i'm wound up over comments against Chelsea, like

many fans, I resort to insults that can be very hurtfull. As a

broadcast professional I should know better and not let it get to

this stage. I've apologized on my radio show World Soccer Daily and

i've also apologized to the management here at Fox Soccer Channel.

But most importantly I wish to apologize to all our viewers."

Notice how he does NOT apologise to the victims of the disaster or

to those people he offended by the comments last week. It seems

someone told him the apology was not good enough as at the end of

the show he said;

"Let me just say one more time if anyone and everyone I offended by

my disparaging comments to do with Liverpool and their supporters I

offer you my full and unconditional apology."

So finally an apology, of sorts, to Liverpool supporters. He does

not though attempt to put what he did and said wrongly correct. No

mention of him being wrong and telling viewers the truth about the

Hillsborough disaster.

Interestingly, a Liverpool fan named Tony from New Mexico did get on

the phone in and had the following to say;

Steven can I just mention to you there, I'd like to thank you from

the bottom of my heart for the apology on the Hillsborough thing

before your apologizing to your employers and your viewers and not

the actual people who it concerned, you've shown your true colours

there sir. Back in England this has snowballed and this is not the

end of it by a long shot. The Hillsborough Justice Campaign are

involved. The newspaper the Daily Mirror are involved and a lot of

other people. I don't agree with the death threats and things you've

been receiving but i'd like for you to get better educated on what

actually happened at Hillsborough.

Aside from apologies and the comments made, it seems to us that

Cohen is simply not fit to represent English football (soccer) on a

national TV show which is attempting to educate fans about the

history and culture of English clubs. He has made many incorrect

comments and a simple apology will not change that.

We would like to hear what you think, and continue to urge you not

to watch the show and continue the boycott.

The show is garbage to begin with. When I heard about this, I watched a little of the episode. I don't accept his apology. He's only sorry because people called him on what he said. The lies he told on air show what he believes imo.

Is he British or American? Not that it makes any difference to the things he said, I'm just curious

He a Brit. Both the presenters are.

Can someone give me some dates for this happening. I thought (as per my comments in the Hillsborough forum) that this refered to an incident a few months ago where an email from him was made public.

Crap show, so I didn't see this, but this clown wants to get fired over this.

Agree ? I don?t watch it. Nick, the LFC fan, is an embarrassment and Cohen is just a smug Chelsea fan who probably wouldn?t even have the jib if Chelsea hadn?t been doing so well over the last couple of years.

As for the comments ? if he?s made them AFTER the previous apology then there are issues to be raised.

I gather this stems from on air comments he made last week, I'm looking for the dates. They both host a radio program on sirius and Nick said that due to the response there would be an apology made on the tuesday tv program (the other one wasn't there). He did apologize at the beginning of the show and at the end. I'll see about a transcript of what he said. I've already posted my feelings on the matter.

Ok I found it. The comments were made on the show that ran on the 6th.

This was what he said at the beginning of the show on tuesday:

" But first, last week here on Fox Football Fone-in, in the heat of the moment, I made some very disparaging remarks about Liverpool Football Club and their supporters. I know that i'm a passionate Chelsea fan and it takes up almost all of my waking hours . I also know that when i'm wound up over comments against Chelsea, like many fans, I resort to insults that can be very hurtfull. As a broadcast professional I should know better and not let it get to this stage. I've apologized on my radio show World Soccer Daily and i've also apologized to the management here at Fox Soccer Channel. But most importantly I wish to apologize to all our viewers."

And at the end of the show:

"Let me just say one more time if anyone and everyone I offended by my disparaging comments to do with Liverpool and their supporters I offer you my full and unconditional apology."

We as football fans in America in general and as Liverpool fans in particular get a double whammy on this. Cohen as a mouthpiece for football in America should not be saying stuff like that as the media here always focuses on hooliganism and mishaps in football games and attempts at every opportunity to label soccer as a hooligan's game. So what does this idiot do? In his twisted hatred of our club he provides them with the ammunition they need. I'm sure he also has his own pathetic agenda against LFC because as many championships as his club wins they have not been able to expand their fan base.

The following is a link to the petition agains Cohen:

Last time he blatantly lied, blamed it on, yes, 'the heat of the moment' and tried to blame the first recipient of his email for sending it on, even though the email ended by urging the person to forward it to as many people as possible. He is just going to keep doing this for as long as his employers allow. Every time the moment gets on the warmish side he'll accuse Liverpool supporters of murder and theft. Is he trying to get a job on 5 Live? An absolute disgrace.

I think these 2 blokes are acquaintances of a very good friend of mine. I have emailed him to check. The radio programme connection is what brings it back as my mate has guested on it a few times but I thought it was on the Clear Channel network.

It's amazing that those two bell ends are the best they can come up with. There are hundreds of blokes here in the US who could do a better job. I've attempted to watch that show and listen to it and it is absolutely awful.

That Cohen guy also claims he was in the 82nd Airborne division too. I don't know how the f*ck that can be true.
