You Get What You Pay For. As Kenny showed when he made 3 big money signings: Aldridge Barnes and Beardsley. Can Rafa do likewise? If he can, Who will he sign?

Rafa doesn't have form for buying superstars, the exact opposite in fact.

There again, I doubt he's had much money to spend in the past either. It'll be an interesting test for him and I guess the Morientes experience has taught him a lesson about undoubtedly classy foreign players adapting the the PL...

Barnes, Beardlsley and Aldridge weren't superstars.

The modern day equivalent would be something like Alves, Alonso and Kuyt. Not like for like, but players like that.

But i tell you what, i'm struggling to think of a player quite like Beardsley in today's football. Comparing Alves to Barnes is a huge stretch but I just can't think of a player anything like Beardsley.

Take your pick

Alex (PSV) - Owned by Chelsea, thats a buy-out clause and a half for starters.

David Silva (Valencia CF) - Risky considering it's his frist season at a big club

Simao Sabrosa (Benfica SL) - Is he a real big step up from Pennant?

Florent Malouda (Olympic Lyon) - Quality, but has played for Lyon for ages could find it hard to adjust to new surroundings.

Fred (Olympic Lyon) - Looks ropey against the bigger sides.

Philip Lahm (Munich) - Brill. He'll do.

Fabio Grosso (Inter Milan) - First season with Inter. 28 too and a late developer.

Charles N'Zogbia (Newcastle Utd) - Headless chicken.

Lukas Podolski (Bayern Munich) - Won't leave Germany. We tried for him in the summer before Bellamy.

Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma) - A thug. Scumbag. Joey Barton is a better player.

Daniel Alves (Sevilla FC) - We all know about this lad now. He'd do.

Diego Milito (Real Zaragoza) - A bit limited from what I've seen. A bad Martin Palermo.

Franck Ribéry (Olympic Marseille) - Arsenal bound by all accounts.

Daniel Carvalho (CSKA Moscow) - He'd do if we couldn't get Kaka', always looks crafty.

Clever, but nah, assume we are fookin loaded. The Carvalho link is interesting (are CSKA linked to Abramovich?).

We keep talking about that poor russian guy. Couldn't we just get uncle Mo to buy Chelsea and then let their players rot in our feeder club on the wirral...? ;)

Messi has the ability to find space where its most crowded, Beardsley was incredible at that.

Ribery can run at a defence and almost like Beardsley they don't know which direction he's going to take. Beardsley was impossible to read.

I'd love it if we came up with a player like that.

I was watching Revista de La Liga on Sky last night, and Balague was saying that Barcelona are looking at Daniel Carvalho as a long term replacement for Deco, who is 30 and who's form has dipped this season.

Carvalho is a very different player to Deco though. Perhaps they were thinking of putting Carvalho on the left and Ronalidinho in the middle?

Hard to believe considering they already have his readymade replacement in Iniesta who is just outstanding.

Big money signings? Beardsley could only be described as big money at £1.9m. Barnes was about £900k and Aldridge £800k as far as I can recall which was fairly average / below average for that time. Aldridge was hardly known as he came from a Division 2 club with Houghton. It was also probably around the time (or shortly before) when Waddle went to Marseille for £5m. That was big money.

I never understood why that prat Souness got rid off Beardo when he had so much left to give. Horrible decision that I think really cost us.

Just shows you how a crocked manager Souness is albeit a great player.
