Aye. You'd never hear us singing it with such passion after winning a big European tie.

Can someone point me to a convincing article that states the song was ours first. Im trying to convince a bunch of manc muppets that it wasn't Celtic's.

Please don't shoot me if I'm wrong but I swear I read an article saying that it acutally originated from the mancs.

Now, there's a difference between originated and first sung with any meaning I guess.

Again, I may well be laughablly wrong.

You are wrong, that was some silly manc tart bulls***ting that started that rumour.

The article was either in the express or daily mail. I forget which. Basically some helmet had written in to say that there was a choir on Old Trafford at half time during one of the games in 50's. The tool goes onto say that the choir sang YNWA thus making their song and not ours. Quality wind up of you ask me. I of course will stand corrected if any manc can prove this. The fact that the choir sang it that is.

You're wrong.

There was a few who used to sing it in the early seventies, including the mancs, but we were the first.

I'm guessing the OP doesn't remember the EC semi of a couple of seasons ago.

Look why the bloody hell does this come up time after time after time?

Evidence for Liverpool being first to sing it and adopt it as an anthem:

TV footage in the early 60s

Radio coverage in the early 60s

Contemporary newspaper coverage from the early 60s

Contemporary magazine/book coverage from the early 60s

Evidence for Celtic being first to sing it and adopt it as an anthem:

None, nada, nothing, zero, zip, zilch

Turn the question back onto them - what proof do they have? There's not a single Celtic historian claims their fans sung it first.

We've been singing it since the 60's.

Celtic to be fair have been singing it for a long time too. Late 60's early 70's I think.

Every second club in Germany seems to sing it these days as well.

This myth about Celtic fans being magic is starting to grate. I've been at SPL games where you could hear a fly fart. They only turn up at big European games and Old Firm derbys - the only games that get any coverage.

If we had beat the Mancs at home in a crucial European game we'd still be there now.

You're right, it's away support on a European night - shouldn't be taken as the regular support. In that regard they remind me of us.

Jesus Christ this comes up so often it's unreal. I was around at the time and the Kop had an irritating habit of joining in with the big pop songs of the day in the pre-match singing - She Loves You etc, by the Beatles - and YNWA just took hold as the most anthemic of the lot, plus being sung by a Liverpool group made up of Liverpool supporters. Celtic hijacked it way down the line. I wouldn't be surprised if it was after we knocked them out of the Cup Winners Cup at Anfield in the 65-66 season and they heard proper singing at a football match for once

I remember Ajax fans singing it in the 70s too, when I was in Holland
