From Benfica match programme

Manc c*** sent me this!

I went to Benfica yesterday and picked up a match programme.....Inferno Na Luz........in the introduction on Page 3 it compared Benfica's experience of facing United to that of facing Liverpool.......

"Those of you who attended last years game beween Benfica and Manchester United will have enjoyed a fantastic encounter, regardless of which side you were supporting. It is to Manchester United's credit that Benfica gained such momentum from their victory that the following tie against Liverpool was such a great performance by our team. The thinking being that if we can defeat Manchester United, then we can certainly beat the likes of Liverpool. As any travelling Benfica fan will testify to, a trip to Manchester is an enjoyable experience and this years visit is already well anticipated, but last years trip to Merseyside was unusual to say the least."

"Inferno Na Luz reporters were amazed that a city which is only 35 miles away from Manchester could be so contrasting in appearance and style, that is to say, lack of it. As the prospective European City of Culture, this writer was expecting great things when journeying to the birthplace of the Beatles. However, in reality it is a far removed place from what is portrayed."

"The place seems to resemble post-war eastern Europe with its dereliction and decay. There are apparently more burnt out cars per kilometre than anywhere else in Europe, with Liverpool being only second in the world to Soweto for this dubious honour. The place seemed to run on a bizarre form of black economy, with drugs and prostitution rife. As visitors, we were seen as easy prey. In one 45-minute period, this writer was offered drugs and sexual services on 17 occasions! The amazing part being that this was actually on the journey from the airport to my hotel. I realise that he had to earn his living, but the taxi driver just wouldn't take no for an answer."

"I am happy to say that this year, we will once again be visiting Manchester and once more be sampling its wonderful hospitality."

you'd have thought they'd want to bring their humiliation last year back up again. for them not to qualify from a weak group was shocking. and it wasnt even as though they were unlucky.

I wonder how Benfica fans would really compare the two ties? I seem to remember reading on a Benfica board last year how superior we are as a club and as a set of supporters when a Manc was trying to drag our name through the mud.

Glorioso SLB!

was it not written by a benfica fan....in teh benfica programme.

thats what i took from reading it.

I'd say it's definately a Manc on a wind up. The bit at the end about the taxi is a dead give away.

The Porteguese lad writes extremely well in English. As it is in the Benfica programme and aimed at the Benfica fans I'm still puzzled as to why he wrote it in English though.

Because it isn't true.

I've never been offered as many drugs or propositioned by hookers as many times as I was in Lisbon by the way.

You should write about that, that would be intresting

Why are you angry about this - so blatantly a wind up and you fell for it.

I don't recall Benfica having an official programme (although my knowledge is limited to the visit in 1984!). I understand that there are a number of unofficial "programmes" and Inferno Na Luz is probably one of them given that the title is used by Benfica fans as a nickname for their team. I think it translates as Hell in the Light. The "programme" is probably the English version prepared with a view to sale to Man U fans.

If the article is genuine, it :

a) was probably written by a fan familiar with the cliches trotted out by Man U fans (it could even have been a Man U fan)

b) is almost certainly fictitious. It loses credibility when it suggests that Manchester is a particularly attractive or stylish city and who in their right mind would survey cities by the number of torched cars per kilometre? Given that recent surveys on car crime tend to show Sheffield as the worst city in the country with Manchester (but not Liverpool) in the top 10.

I suspect that the whole thing is a wind up manufactured by a manc on Redcafe seeking to flog the useless programme on Ebay to more gullible mancs...
