Did Sami really have that great a game as some on here suggest? Ok he clipped the post with a header .... I'll give you that one. (Opens can of worms and offers to the YNWA bretheren  )

I thought he looked sluggish and his distribution was very poor. I think it's time for Agger to be slotted in alongside Carra.

Thoughts please! :hmm:

Getting skinned by (Danny?) Webber everytime he ran at him and hoofing the ball for 90 minutes isn't really my definition of having a good game.

He looked seriously ruffled yesterday. But he's had em before and it should be out of his system by Tuesday though. Agger has got great potential and will get a fair share of games this season, but our first choice pairing is still Sami and Carra. One game does not change that

Was wondering when this sort of post would appear. We always get the "should we drop Sami" at the start of every season it seems like.

And he always ends up being one of our best players, off day yesterday but he's still by far one of the two first choice centre backs. That said, he has to be on his game regularly and not have to many days like yesterday otherwise Agger will be in there.

Sami was pretty awful yesterday, I think he missed having the option of Xabi in front of him. Without Xabi in the team are defence were required to start the play off and it just didn't work,we lost possesion from aimless hoofing

Agger coming on gave us a noticeable improvement in distribution and possesion, he looks so comfortable on the ball.

We badly missed Xabi's intelligence and passing yesterday. Ball retention was pretty awful, particularly in the first half. Everyone was having a race on who can give the ball away quicker

If Agger keeps doing well, it might make it hard to drop him

Posted

Lumped it up a little too much yesterday when a good pass would have held possesion. Not writing him off but if he continues to do that he will find Agger getting the nod over him.

He did come close to scoring a few times though.

agreed.and its not that i think that after one game.he was very poor coming the second half of the last season.sorry, but he needs to be dropped from the starting eleven

Got to be a WUM surely?

what is WUM?

Good argument.

Agger is a good prospect, and he will probably be rotated with hyypia this season, but to say hyypia was poor last season is laughable

Wind up merchant.

It's more than laughable, which is why I didn't even respond to his post.

If he isn't a WUM, then he needs a straight jacket and fast...

Agger has a few week now to prove his worth. With Carragher out for a few weeks Agger will get a run in the team. If he playes as well as he has been playing recently and Sami has another off game or two then you have to believe that Rafa will see sense and drop Sami and play Agger alongside Carragher.

Love Sami but I think its time we moved on to be honest. If Agger plays better then Sami then we have to let him go and move on.

If we want to win the Premiership then we can?t afford Sami having these off days. It could have cost us 3 points yesterday if he got caught. He?s still great in the air but everything else has fallen a bit.

In Rafa we trust :D

Think Hyypia is gradually going to fall back into the Hamann role in that he'll be used mainly as a sub as the season progresses. Thats my view anyway.

agree.

The main difference from former years is that now he actually has competition. It all depends on how well Agger performs obviously, but I do think Rafa will be inclined to make the shift sooner than later if Agger can cut it on a consistent basis, without hyypia neccesarily being finished or anything of the sort.

Thought he looked uncomfortable at times and yes, his distribution and passing in general was pretty poor.

Early season rust, he'll be fine again.

I agree that he will be back to reaping praise from us fans... Its the start of the season and at his age it will take a bit more effort and time to get fully fit but I know that Sami has the potential to have another great season for us if he wants it.... and come on... we know he wants it...top man

I bet Sami loves being written off, it happens at the start of every season...

although it must get annoying.... the man has been 'past it' for years now and yet he always comes good when the chips are down.. Fans are a fickle bunch and that goes without saying.. however , no matter what happens with Sami he is already a liverpool legend in my book.

Oh yeah... and before Xabi he missed Didi and before Didi he missed Rolleyes

mock buts its true, we had much better control of the game when Agger came on and took responsibility for moving the ball through midfield, something that wasn't happening between the midfield two, and the two centre halves.

The 'drop Hyypia' brigade out after just one league game, earlier than usual then.

Can we save these threads for posterity, because they'll all be saying how wonderful he is again a couple of months into the season and they should be held to account for their ridiculous knee-jerking.

Sami looked the way he did during the first half on Saturday (sluggish, off the pace) for about a month a few years ago. At that point even his staunchest supporters thought he may have been finished. However he came out of that little bad patch, and has continued to be the rock our defence is built on.

Every now and again he's shown up for pace for half an hour or so, but in general his positioning and reading of the game is so good it's pretty rare.

Suggesting he should be dropped is absolutely laughable. Agger's coming of age means if the Dane can stay injury-free he'll be rotated more often, but Sami will still be first choice for the majority of the big games this season, and he won't let us down...
