Hope he gets a few more chances between now and the end of the season. I can't help but feel that may be the last we see of him a red shirt before he's shipped off to the lower leagues in the summer, based on previous youngsters given brief cameos in the first team...

Barry's had his heart set on this since May and shows no sign of relenting. He may recommit but he will never realise his ambitions at Villa. He's got a better chance of doing that here. We all know how keen Benitez is to sign him. I could see it happening in January to be honest if not in the next few weeks. Not that I'm necessarily thrilled about it.

I think Rafa should start throwing six or seven of the reserves into the starting line up for league cup games like Arsenal. They've proven this season at reserve level that they're already a good few steps above anything else in that league and the only way they can progress further is if they're tested at first team level.

The Guardian match report wasn't exactly dishing out the praise either...

I don't think we should sack him now mid season with still lots to play for but my faith is being seriously tested by all this. You have to question some of the players though. Kuyt, Kewell, Aurelio, Gerrard, Alonso, and Carragher amongst others have all proven themselves in the past but they're just not doing it at the moment.

Don't have it myself but watched a bit when I was home for Xmas and anytime I caught it it was just re runs of games this season which doesn't interest me at all to be honest. Youth coverage and reserve games are good I suppose but they're just as easily watched over the web nowadays while you could also podcast any sort of news shows IMO.

Yes but when Gerrard, Carragher, Reina, Alonso, Kuyt, Crouch, Bellamy, Agger and the rest all learn of the demise of the DIC deal they will immediately ask for a transfer and Rafa will join Real next week....so again, it hardly matters....

Next season I think Rafa needs to ditch the idea of throwing maybe one or two kids into the team for the Carling Cup and just stick a load in to see how they go. Having played together at reserve or youth level they'd probably gel better than a mix of first team fringe players and youngsters. It certainly seems to be what Arsenal are doing and as we've seen in their Carling Cup runs in recent years, it seems to be working. We've got a lot of quality youngsters on our books now (or so we've been told). Lets give them a go.
